Scunthorpe Utd: Gunning could be about to add to transfer woes

A DISAPPOINTING summer in the transfer market for Scunthorpe United is on the verge of suffering a new blow today with the news that the Iron could be about to miss out on Gavin Gunning.

Alan Knill had yesterday been ‘hopeful’ of being able to persuade the 20-year-old defender to move to Glanford Park on a full-time basis after a week on-trial during pre-season.

Gunning though was last night reported to be holding talks with Scottish Premier League side Dundee United about moving north of the border as part of a deal that would see David Goodwillie heading in the other direction.

A decision to snub Scunthorpe would leave the Iron short of cover at the back just days ahead of their League One opener at Wycombe Wanderers.

The news comes as something of a surprise given Knill had said after Saturday’s 5-0 home defeat by Barnsley that the Irishman had turned down a move to the Terrors.

Yesterday the Iron boss thought the player was back at Blackburn attempting to negotiate a pay-off of his contract at Ewood Park.

“Once he gets that then maybe we can do something,” said Knill, who identified a left-back as one of his primary targets for a summer shopping spree, but is still yet to add to his squad in that area.

Bringing in a striker and much-needed goal threat has also been a problem for the Iron, who travel to Adams Park on Saturday.

“"Also, Michael Collins played right-back last year for us and did quite well so we're okay at full-back, we've got options."

    Anyone want my Wycombe ticket?”

“It's alright saying 'get a new board' but who in Scunthorpe has the money to put into a football club ... or the inclination to do so? Except Mr Tata perhaps, anyone phoned India.”

“Don't worry chaps. I'm sure that when Gunning goes to Dundee we'll be told that actually a specialist leftback wasn't a priority at all and that we've got a number of players who can play there, as we were told before the possibility of signing a leftback actually arose last week.”

“Not surprised at all scunnyfan,we always drag our feet when we sign players. We dont take as long when we give players away for nothing. We are still short of a left back and a goalscorer. Will we have to wait until we are in the bottom 4 before we buy anybody.Time for wharton and nodding donkeys to go now ,and get in a new board with the slightest bit of ambition,at this rate we are soon going to be non league like the codheads.I fear nothing has changed at our club which to many of us is a crying shame."UP THE IRON"!!!”

“Only Alan Knill. He never learns to keep his mouth shut until the signature is on the contract.”
