Scunthorpe Utd: Iron boss is happy to trade a performance for points

Manager Alan Knill celebrated the fickleness of football as the Iron's first League One win of the season came on the back of one of their poorest performances.

The Scunthorpe United boss labelled his side's display against Yeovil Town as 'pretty poor' and 'flat', but was nonetheless grateful for goals from Damien Mozika either side of half-time.

The Frenchman's double earned the Iron a 2-1 victory and moved them out of the relegation zone.

More importantly, they ended United's winless start to the campaign at the 10th time of asking and put to bed a situation which had become more and more of a worry as each game passed by.

"It plays on everyone's minds," said Knill post-match.

"We all talk about performance, performance, performance, but you have to have the points to go with those performances.

"It just shows how football is, it's ridiculous.

"You don't have the performance but you take the points.

"We've been saying that with the games we've lost or drawn, it just looked like our day today.

"But I think you earn that from what you've done before.

"You keep believing and you keep positive and you earn that little bit of luck. I hope it will continue."

Mozika's goals, one from inside and the other outside the penalty area, were the midfielder's first in Iron colours on the back of his six-figure switch to Glanford Park a month ago.

They capped another busy display from the former Bury ace, who seems to have taken on a different role to that he did so successfully at Gigg Lane.

"I was pleased for Damo," continued the United manager.

"When I had him at Bury I never used to let him get beyond the halfway line - he was a sit in midfielder.

"Now all of a sudden he's a goal-scoring midfielder, but they were two good finishes.

"He got in the box and timed his run well. It was great play by Eddie Nolan (who laid each one on a plate) and they were two good goals."

Although happy to accept a slice of luck, Knill was disappointed by his side's inability to reproduce the sort of football that has produced plenty of praise, if not points this term.

This time roles were reversed, with Yeovil unlucky not to pick up at least a draw.

The Glovers dominated the opening 45 minutes, creating 'enough chances to win three games' in the words of their manager Terry Skiverton.

But they were left to rue a 37th minute miss from striker Kieran Agard, who charged down a clearance from Iron keeper Sam Johnstone but could only hit a post when presented with an open goal.

"It wasn't a great performance, but a win is a win I suppose," assessed Knill.

"The luck we haven't had in previous games, we had today.

"I thought we were pretty poor first half. We wanted energy and all the things we've had in the past, but we just didn't get it.

"We regrouped at half-time and said a few things, but though we were better in the second half, it was still a struggle.

"We've got a really talented group and I just expect all the time. When they don't deliver it frustrates me more than makes me angry.

"But for the performances before, we'll take this. Well take the luck and we'll take the win.

"It's been quite a good month, now we've got to progress again."

If they can marry together the ability to grind out a win as well as playing football, that won't be too much of a problem.
