Keeper Sam Johnstone’s loan spell at Scunthorpe United has been extended into a third month.

The Manchester United shot-stopper will remain at Glanford Park up to and including the Iron’s clash with Carlisle on December 10.

Johnstone has made eight appearances for Scunthorpe since making the switch in September, though has seen Sam Slocombe impress in his place while being sidelined with a dislocated finger.

However, the 18-year-old has returned to training this week, with United manager Alan Knill hoping he will be available for selection ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup trip to AFC Wimbledon.

“Sam S has done a brilliant job but its about the team, not one man. Sam J is a better keeper so we need to use him while we can. Sam Slocombe's time will come. I think Josh is the one that needs to worry when he is fit cos Sam S does a better job for me than Josh.”

“Sam Slocombe dropped then, how to ruin a young keepers confidence by Alan"its never my fault" Knill”
