Scunthorpe United hope their first piece of business during the January transfer window will be to secure the return of midfielder Oliver Norwood to Glanford Park.

The 20-year-old playmaker was meeting Manchester United coaches yesterday to discuss his time with the Iron and what the rest of the campaign holds.

The Premier League champions are likely to be keen to get Norwood out on loan again during the second half of the campaign, but it may be that they feel he now needs a spell in the Championship.

Norwood revealed three weeks ago that Sir Alex Ferguson had wanted him to play in the second tier before he joined United, but Alan Knill had persuaded him to allow the player to link up with the Iron instead.

"On Tuesday he was speaking with his manager about what he's going to do," explained Scunthorpe assistant boss Chris Brass.

"Manchester United are happy enough with his progress and now he's got through that meeting we'll speak with his bosses as well.

"It was unfair to talk about it until he had spoken to his club, but we know where we're at.  We'd like him back at Scunthorpe.

"It was hard for Oli coming in the other day after a break (Norwood had served a three-match suspension after being sent off in the 3-2 defeat at Notts County), but he did much better at Hartlepool with respect to the ugly side of things, which he needs to add to his game."

Norwood has made 18 appearances since moving to Scunthorpe in August, scoring once - a long-range screamer in the 2-2 draw with Huddersfield.

During the last couple of matches, he has been used as the anchor man in a three-man midfield and Brass says the Iron are pleased with how the youngster has fared.

"You have to remember Oli's still a kid, but he's a good kid that's going to be a good player in the future," he added.

"He's got a lot to learn, but he's a bright, intelligent footballer that will continue to get better as he learns."

“Atkins? Atkins? - hold your head in shame.
Hooper on loan? - hold your head in shame.”

“It would appear that Knill guarantees his young Premiership loanees games to get them here. Not good for team spirit if this is true. Knill clearly has respect from those who have played for him previously (e.g Mozika, Ajose) but "team" ethic isn't helped if thesee loan players have guarantees.
Atkins had mixed success with loans, good ones being Cork, and wasn't Hooper first on loan?”

“You would expect players coming from Man Utd to be real quality. They certainly think they are. However Once a good player doesn't mean always a good player.”

“Norwood hasn't shown much at SUFC. He is a central midfield player but has been pushed out wide because of the requirement to play him but with O'Connor and Toggs fit and playing centre mid. But he isn't effective out wide, nor as a stopper (too small and slight). Let him go.

Of the loanees, only Shane Duffy has given value for money. Johnstone started well but has been poor recently (Bury and Chesterfield).

Together with Ajose, we haven't had much luck with loanees this season. Barra and Nige were poor in this area too.”

“He certainly does have a lot to learn and I'm a bit concerned that it may be done at our expense. When he is on his game, he does have real quality about him but he is yet another inconsistent performer who gives a lot of ball away cheaply, putting the team under pressure. When he first came, I thought he looked a great prospect but I don't think of him as a key player now. If Mozika was fit, he would struggle to command a place in midfield.
How I would love him to prove me wrong and go on a good run. Does he have the experience to be a dependable holding midfielder?
Shame we can't take on the Owls after the good result at Hartlepool”
