Scunthorpe Utd: Iron looking to wing their way to success this season

AFTER witnessing his side eventually dispose of Accrington Stanley in the Carling Cup first round, Scunthorpe United manager Alan Knill heaped praise on two key components of his team.

Clearly an advocate of expansive, attacking football, the Iron boss places a large responsibility for delivering that on the shoulders of his two wingers.

On Tuesday, that was Mark Duffy and – after replacing the injured Jimmy Ryan – goalscorer Andy Barcham.

Both, after the interval, delivered performances which suggested they could change a game, leaving Knill suitably impressed.

"That is what they are for," he said, when asked about their ability to turn things in United's favour.

"There is no point in having two wide players if they don't have the ball.

"So we do our best to get them on the ball and then they do their stuff – they are talented footballers."

Although disappointing at times, the Iron were dominant for long spells of the 2-0 win at Stanley.

That follows an equally commanding display during the 1-1 draw at Wycombe four days previously.

It is an unbeaten run, however small, which Knill believes is slowly building spirit among his troops – good timing ahead of a clash with a fellow former Championship team at Glanford Park on Saturday.

"Now we have got a big game against Preston, but at least we go into it with confidence," he added.

“I suspect that most of you Johnny-come-latelys on this string should be a bit careful of critising PStoff (son of PDoff). As far as I can see, he has been mostly correct in his comments in the past.

Comments re "we're going to wing it" does imply that our parsimonious chairman won't give Knill a new striker. While we may now have good wide men, it requires a striker to finish. I believe that Dagnall will be fine for this division and Thompson (sorry PStoff but he is a striker not a winger, ask the man himself) will get goals IF he stays fit. Henderson is on probation. Grant is a winger not a striker and as such competes against Duff (AK likes him) and Ryan and Barcham (AK signed them) so I think we will see him out on loan fairly soon.

We need another striker and a left footed defender. Nolan has started well but who is his cover?”

“Alan Knill keeps saying that he wants more strikers then he brings in a Spanish central midfielder, formerly of Real Madrid, who has spent three weeks on trial with Oldham Athletic. Marc De Val Fernandez is training with the club with a view to earning a full-time contract. But you never know he may be our second SIR ALEX”

“PStoff has really been exposed as being totally clueless yet again. Where are these strikers you want coming from? Where is the money coming from and how much will you pay? Neil Mellor wanted £15,000 a week to sign for Sheff Weds plus a signing on fee and a transfer fee. Is that the kind of money you want us to pay out?”

“PStoff doesn't half talk out of his @r*E... quite funny really... take your point though that we don't have a sharp, hooper, patterson etc this year but you never know. Daggers might start knocking them in this year - did it at Rochdale!! Up the Iron, looking forward to Sat - you going Saturday PStoff or you gonna sit at home like billy no mates waiting to post more nonsense on here!!!”

“@ P Stoff ... you live on a different planet. If you want a new striker, Tottenham have loads, why don't you break a window at White Hart Lane and grab one. ;)”

“Nice one PStoff. Accusing someone else of not knowing "enough" about Football. Brush up on REALITY before you come on here spouting NEGATIVITY because given your comments you don't know enough about it."”

“I love it when P.Doff puts people in their places, what an icon. Just a pity he can't accept that others are allowed a different opinion from his own, if he did more may comment on (t)his site.”

“Thompson is a winger, Robertson needs to earn his wings here, shown nothing so far, Dagnall just taps it at the keeper but runs about a lot, Grant isn't liked by Knill and not scored a goal for this club yet.

We need a striker, we need a goal scorer, another Sharp/ Keogh / Hooper not the powder puff merchants we have now. If you are prepared to accept what we have then you are accepting another poor season. Brush up on football before you come on here spouting positivity because given your comments you don't know enough about it.”
