SCUNTHORPE United's reserves beat Hull City 2-1 at Glanford Park thanks to second-half strikes from Callum Howe and Aron Wint

The last time these two sides met, the Iron suffered an 8-0 drubbing.

But they showed their steel last night by delivering a couple of knock-out blows after weathering the City storm.

Sam Slocombe's penalty save from Gavan Holohan in the 57th minute swung the game on its head after the Tigers dominated the first hour.

The Scunthorpe keeper frustrated City until he was finally beaten in the 90th minute by Danny Emerton.

Jonathan Margetts forced Slocombe into his first crucial save when the pair came face-to-face in a one-on-one in just the third minute. Margetts should have done better instead of slipping a shot to Slocombe’s left.

Two minutes later, Slocombe denied Margetts again with the second of a fine double save. The first from Kealan Dillon was parried into Margetts’ path but Slocombe’s bravery shone through again, even if it did cost him an accidental boot to the forehead.

Sandwiched in-between those two chances was the Iron’s best chance of the first half. Callum Howe headed over a corner taken on the right by Fabio Snow, who scored an own goal in the 8-0 defeat last month.

Margetts should have scored in the 25th minute after Gavan Holohan slipped the ball through to him, but his toe-poked effort went the wrong side of the right-hand post.

Margetts’ strike partner Emerton came close to beating Slocombe with a difficult flicked effort from Dillon’s right-wing cross, but he didn’t get enough purchase on the ball to make it count.

The Iron came out strongly in the second half.

For the first time in the game, Scunthorpe created chaos in the City defence. Jamie Wootton twice had chances at the back post to score but City managed to clear their lines.

Slocombe was already favourite for the man of the match award before producing another fine save to deny Margetts after good work by Emerton.

But his finest moment came in the 57th minute when he saved Holohan’s penalty, after the midfielder had been upended in the box by Joshua Lacey.

Six minutes later, Howe’s deflected shot gave the Iron an unlikely lead.

It was a body blow to City who were now ruing all those missed opportunities in the first half. Aron Wint delivered the knock-out blow in the 67th minute, slipping the ball under Mark Oxley.

Emerton preserved City’s record of scoring in all their games this season when he got the better of his defender and shot past Slocombe, while Sonny Bradley could have earned the Tigers a point but his shot flew wide.

“What's this - some sort of compensation journalism for the failure of the first team? I bet the club is in overdrive at the moment trying to prevent this season's haemorrhaging of fans to below 3000. It will need more than a win by the youth team to bolster support. Knill needs some of the Hooper money released to him so he can get 5 new players in and pay 5 piles of dung off.”

    “Ashley? Ashley? Josh? and Josh?

We probably won as Hull were laughing so much.

    The world has gone mad.”

“I was at the game yesterday and I was only impressed with a few of our players. Slocombe had an excellent game and kept us in the contest. Hull should have buried us off by half time. Ashley Palmer dealt with almost everything that came at him. Callum Howe the other centre back was unconvincing. He showed signs of potential and signs of woeful play. Josh Lacey had a terrible game at left back to be honest. Ashley Jackson the right back wasn't much better. Fabio Snow was the standout outfield player in centre midfield. He won a lot of challenges especially in the 2nd half and created some good attacks. Josh Greenhoff didn't really impress me in centre midfield. Wint and Grayson were both poor to be honest. They really didn't create much on the wings. They never got many crosses in between them and they were very frustrating. Jordan Thewlis ran his backside off for the team but didn't have much support in attack from Jamie Wootton.”

“Very good result after the previous drubbing.”
