Scunthorpe Utd: Knill - Iron must be more clinical

They have matched most of the teams they've played, but manager Alan Knill admits Scunthorpe United need to 'compete a little better' if they are to haul themselves out of the relegation zone.

The Iron were left frustrated on Tuesday night as their winning run came to an end with a 1-0 defeat at home to Walsall, who subsequently overtook them in the table.

Florent Cuvelier's goal proved to be the difference at Glanford Park as the visitors successfully repelled a persistent Scunthorpe attack in the second half.

But Knill has warned there is no time to dwell on the result, which came on the back of victories over Rochdale and Leyton Orient, as United look to bounce back against Brentford on Saturday.

"We were on 31 points before the game, and a win would take us to 34," he said.

"It brings everyone else around us into it. The ones above us, it brings them back down to us and was a real good opportunity to move up the league. And it would have been three wins on the trot.

"It just hasn't worked, but there's not much you can do about it.

"Once it's over, it's over and you have to quickly move on.

"Whenever you lose you feel like you've taken a step back, especially at home.

"We were on a pretty good run, so it's just disappointing again.

"We should have comfortably got something out of the game, we shouldn't have lost.

"That's the most disappointing thing. We conceded a poor goal and then created enough chances to win a couple of games but didn't take them.

"The good thing is we've still got two games in hand on quite a few teams, but we have to take those chances.

"We can compete but we just have to compete a little better and be a little more clinical when we need to.

"I thought we had a right go in the second half but just couldn't put it in the back of the net.

"It's frustrating more than anything.

"You're just waiting for it to go in the goal. It just didn't. It was just one of those nights.

"Where Saturday, at Orient, everything went it, on Tuesday, it just didn't.

"We dominated the game again, we just need to put the ball in the back of the net at crucial times.

"We created enough chances to do that but just didn't convert.

"The players had a go. It's not as if they've not tried. They had a right go at it.

"It just didn't go for us."

    “Brockiron :
'The best move out of the back is from the keeper to Tommos head, I bet he gets 80-90% flick ons from them, to bring in front man and then follow up from midfield/ full backs.'

Sounds like your preferred style of play would be more suited to Rugby you idiot.”

“4-4-2 Is the way to go, it worked with Sharp, it worked with Hooper, they had a good midfield even though we had the same moaners on then. Remember "McCan't" lol. Parkin is more than a target man. The best move out of the back is from the keeper to Tommos head, I bet he gets 80-90% flick ons from them, to bring in front man and then follow up from midfield/ full backs. We can only play with what we have, stop bloody moaning P@stoff & Knill for Knill if your not happy go see the egg chasers across the river!!!. Up the Iron from a happy clap clap clapper , get a life. Brock in Keadby. Still a long way to go yet, plenty of games. LOL. see you Saturday???”

“Still think that playing 4-5-1 at home was the wrong way to go, especially with Parkin up front. Great player he is i really dont think he makes a good solo front man. 4-4-2 is the way to go at home with someone with good position awareness up front with Parkin that can feed off of him (maybe Thompson or even Grant would have worked better then the 4-5-1)”

“Am only able to follow the Iron on radio & web but have noticed we dont seem to put ourselves about till we go 1 down or into the second half. May I suggest we get stuck in from the first whistle and put the opposition under severe pressure, also with our "strong" bench players can be replaced.ITS TIME TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED UP THE IRON !!!!!!!!!”

“We'll end up back in league two but at least knill knows how to get a team out of that league, hopefully not how he's getting us out of L1!!”

“The problem is mr knill, the fact that we lost again at home gifting 3 points away again, time for a winning mentality at home and a lets get at em from the off minset and belief at home. The big question for me is are you the man to motivate and instill this belief in our players,if not league 2 here we come."UP THE IRON"!!!”
