MANAGER Alan Knill is quite prepared to play the waiting game again as he looks to add to his Scunthorpe United squad for the new season.

Three new faces have already arrived at Glanford Park this summer.

But the Iron boss is still looking to add another striker – and could yet dip into the loan market for a youngster.

Knill is prepared to pay money for the right player he feels will complete his restructured attack.

He has two specific targets in mind, but is still awaiting the green light to open talks.

“I am happy with the three we have brought in so far and if we had to start the season with the squad we already have here, then I would be happy with that,” the United manager declared.

“But it is important to have competition for places up front, something we did not really have here last season when I arrived.

“I thought we looked quite dangerous in the last few games, without being able to apply the finishing touch.

“I think a lot of that is down to confidence.

“That’s why I think it is important that we have options at the top end of the pitch.”

Knill admits though, it is taking longer than he had hoped to build his new squad.

So far this summer the manager has recruited striker Jordan Robertson, midfielder Jimmy Ryan and former Gillingham winger Andy Barcham.

“The process of signing players seems to be taking so long,” Knill confessed.

“Not just for us. You look all over and really there has not been much business that has gone on.

“Players are becoming more choosy and I think that some of them are finding a shock with their earning expectations.

“There are not many clubs really prepared to pay a lot of money these days.

“And I have got to say I think that is for the better.

“I do think we are still maybe a striker short, but I am prepared to wait until we can do something.”

Knill admits he has so far spent little time in pursuit of a possible loan signing.

“I wanted to get some permanent ones in first,” he said.

“There are some young players we have targeted for six months or the season but as yet we have not pushed it.

“At the same time, we have quite a big squad here already.”

“We have Andy Wright, Andy Hughes, Cliffy and Nolan who can cover those positions. Maybe not the best but Wright played ok last year and think will probably find it easier in L1, Nolan was great in first half of last year so hopefully he can get his backside into gear again, Cliffy will be ok when back from injury and hughes plays either left or right back so I think plenty of cover... we can use loans if needed but why should we buy more defenders on perm deals... we'll end up in a situation like we had with centre backs (i.e. Raynes, Nelson, Canavan, Reid, Jones)”

“We definatly need a couple of full backs as well. Surely you realise this Mr Knill?”

“Full backs? We have two (one of those is Andrew Wright) and an injured Cliff.”
