Scunthorpe United boss Alan Knill has backed his misfiring strikers to start weighing in with the goals.

Bobby Grant and Chris Dagnall remain the Iron’s top two scorers, with six and four respectively, despite neither having found the net in almost a month.

Creating chances has not been a problem, but it is from elsewhere on the pitch where they are being taken.

Knill however, insists it will only be a matter of time before that changes.

“There’s always a concern if your strikers don’t score,” he said. “But the good thing is, the rest of the players are scoring.

“Earlier on in the season Bobby scored six and Dags scored four, and the others weren’t scoring.

“I think they’re probably more concerned than me.

“I think they’re going to score. But the good thing is, up until then, everyone else has been weighing in with goals.

“The weight of expectation on a striker is probably more than any other position.

“As a coach or a manager, all you can do is believe in the players, work with them day in, day out, try to help them and let their talent come through.

“I’m quite sure that it will do.

“Dagnall is a good player and can score, Bobby can score.

“Once Nicky Ajose gets sharper we know he will score because his record says he will.

“It’s concerning at times when they have a chance and don’t take it. But I think the bigger picture is, I believe in the players, simple as that.”

Knill admits Peterborough loanee Ajose is still a little short on sharpness.

The former Manchester United striker suffered a hamstring injury in Posh’s first match of the campaign, but made his first start for Scunthorpe in Tuesday’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat to Oldham Athletic.

“I thought he was okay,” Knill said of the front man’s 72-minute appearance.

“He looked rusty but he hasn’t played a lot of football.

“I’m sure he’s going to get better once he gets a little bit of sharpness.

“It will come. We’ve seen him and know what he’s capable of.”

Knill has also said it will take Ajose time to settle in at Scunthorpe.

“Obviously it takes time to integrate,” said the United manager.

“He’s jumped from Man United reserves to Bury, to Peterborough and now to Scunthorpe.

“It takes some time to adapt and it’s a transition, but I know he’ll get there.”

“The trouble is,Nunez,Sears & such like, are good players but again are not strikers. We got too many like that already. Its a pity S Duffy is required in defence cos he could play CF.”

“He may know more about Leeds than me but that's where his knowledge ends.
One things for sure he definitely knows more about any subject than you do.”

“Hate to say it to a Cod but I bet you know more about football in your little finger than Robin Jackson has learnt in his whole life.”

“Lol, followed them for 20 years as it was my dad's team aswell as town. I've not been very lucky with the teams fate has given me. Grimsby have had relegation after relegation along with Leeds. You lot should count your chickens that i don't decide to support your iron or you may go the same way.”

“GTFC83 - did you support Leeds before Grimsby dropped out of the league or have you latched on to them since, in substitution for your beloved mariners.”

“Nunez may do a 3 month loan spell he's not making the bench at the moment due to the signing of Vayrynen and they've just signed Danny Pugh from Stoke to play on the left. The only time Nunez will come in now is if Howson is injured but we have Vayrynen will be first choice - i follow Leeds united as well as my beloved Mariners, I'm not Billy Paynter's agent but would like to see him off the payroll - he's an accomplished league 1 striker that couldn't make the cut in the Championship. They have Forssell, McCormack, Becchio, Somma, Keogh (who you'll remember) so Paynter is nowhere to be seen. Leeds don't even play in the reserves league anymore now so the likes of Nunez and Paynter are just training but never playing. Leeds are in contract negotiations with Nunez and if he signs a longer term he'll go on loan to keep match fitness up - failing that he could be a free transfer from July. Just some information to wet your appetite.........”

“The same Nunez thats on the firnge of the Leeds first team? Is he really going to drop a division when he is getting some games for Leeds? Think again.”
