It hasn't quite been what he had hoped for but Scunthorpe manager Alan Knill admits the first quarter of the season has, nonetheless, not been far off what he expected.

The Iron boss knows it will take time to implement his vision at Glanford Park.

"It's been frustrating more than anything," Knill said of his side's start to the campaign. "And, if I'm going to be honest, pretty much what we expected. We knew it was going to be quite difficult.

"Whenever a team comes down into a division below, there are a lot of things you have to get over.

"The first thing is, you're not that player anymore. You're not that Championship player that you might have perceived you were. You're actually a League One player.

"In any division down, you have to work twice as hard, because the opposition do.

"The second thing is trying to put a team together, which is always difficult.

"But I think we're slowly getting there.

"Always along the way there is a setback and you have to quickly get over it, move on and don't dwell, but try to put those things right.

"That's what we're trying to do – in the way that we only know how.

"We've got X amount of players to work with. We have to work with those players.

"We can't go out and buy a striker because we're at the top of our budget now.

"You've got to be very patient. Building a team now is so much more difficult than it used to be. People are so much more interested about themselves.

"You have to build a group that will sacrifice themselves for the person next to them.

"Sometimes that's difficult but you have to keep on. Eventually you will get there."

“Make that five - Alan Knill is getting this team playing good football.
The frustration in the fans is that we, like him, can see that it is so close but just not getting results.
You are right "time and patience" are needed - and a bloody brute of a striker up front!”

“Four consecutive posts on this website agreeing with each other...?

Well, I never thought I'd see that...!
And here's a fifth, the guy needs time; he looks to have bought very well from what I've seen, and striking is clearly a rather large problem...”

“Totally agree. Same sentiments I had earlier in the week though if he wasn't worried about Strikers you'd have to be worried for him wouldn't you?”

“Never a truer word. To all these idiots calling for this chaps head hang yours in shame. The signings he has brought in (bar Ajose) all seem to be spot on and he needs time to get rid of the crud he inherited and work with those he did that aren't crud get on with the job.

At the moment he has half a defence and strikers that aren't happening. He mentions strikers above so it is definitely one area he isn't happy with.

As long as we don't go down I will call this a successful season.”
