He may have a soft spot for the FA Cup, but Scunthorpe United manager Alan Knill has stressed there is no room for sentiment in the grand old competition.

League Two AFC Wimbledon have earned plenty of plaudits for their progression up the football ladder, with the Iron boss adding his own.

However, keen to bat away any thoughts of an upset, Knill is very much focused on ensuring it is United who progress to the next round.

"They're a good side," he said of Saturday's opponents.

"They have a settled team that's been there for a while.

"They know how they're going to play and how they're going to set up.

"And they've got some threats, so it's going to be a tough game.

"It's brilliant what they've done.

"It's good, but there's no room for sentimentality or what they've done.

"It's about us on Saturday."

Eventually making it to the third round of the cup is the aim for Knill, who would love to see his team pit their wits against a top-flight side.

"For me, as a player and as a coach really, I don't think we've ever been very far," he said.

"Getting a good team is the big thing – get a good draw, make some money.

"We had a good draw against Newcastle (in the League Cup) on TV, you want exactly the same again, where it's a chance to hopefully bring a Premier League team to the club.

"But there are some tough rounds before you get there.

"Let's get through them and then decide to start patting ourselves on the back thinking we've done well.

"The first one is Wimbledon, which is a really tough game for us.

"It's a great competition. Absolutely brilliant.

"I don't think there's another one like it in the world, where the non-league teams all start out in it and it usually finishes with Manchester United v Chelsea.

"The biggest thing is it gives everybody a chance to play the big teams that you'd never play.

"I like it a lot and I like the whole history of it as well.

"I think it's the biggest cup competition in all the leagues in all the world. Everybody knows the FA Cup.

"There is always a potential for an upset, but I don't like that part!"

“At least we have Ajose (surprisingly not cup tied by the Posh) and I would watch this space on some training ground knocks before the weekend.

Wharton traditionally pre-budgets for the third round money spinner so woe betide Knill and the lads if an upset occurs Saturday. Given last Saturday's performance we may have a free weekend in early January.”
