Manager Alan Knill hopes Saturday's success against Tranmere Rovers will help alleviate some of the 'apprehension' among Scunthorpe United fans when the team plays at Glanford Park.

The 4-2 victory was only the sixth time the Iron have won in 29 home league matches, a run stretching back to September 2010.

Knill believes fans' frustrations, which have spilled over from a forgettable last season, are hampering his side's efforts to turn their home ground into a fortress.

But he understands supporters have to see something on the pitch worth cheering before his side will receive a rousing reception.

"There's probably only the Huddersfield game where we've been at it from the start here," the Iron boss admitted.

"I don't know why, possibly because last year they weren't very good at home, but there is an apprehension in the crowd.

"This year has been so-so, but I've said to the players, it's for us to sort that out.

"The fans want to applaud, clap and cheer, but we have to give them something to cheer about. Hopefully now we're starting to break those shackles.

"More teams seem to win away now than at home.

"But if you're committed, aggressive, have a tempo about you and a desire to go forward, people will accept that.

"It's when you go the other way and try to be negative, probably that's the bit that annoys everybody. It certainly annoys me."

Scunthorpe are currently 15th in League One and have seen their hopes of a battle in the top half of the table hit by nine draws in their 16 matches.

They have though picked up as many points in October as they mustered during the opening two months of the campaign and Knill is happy with the progress being made.

"We made some mistakes on Saturday, but put things right and came out with a decent win," he added.

"I was on Talksport on Friday night and somebody phoned up and asked me 'at the start of the season, if you'd lost four games in 15, would you be happy?'.

"We are, it's just those nine draws that have cost us. We need to turn those sorts of games into three points, like we did against Tranmere.

"That's what moves you up the league quicker."
