BOSS Alan Knill remains confident of welcoming another trialist into his Scunthorpe United squad at Rotherham on Wednesday.

But he has already seen one potential new recruit opt to train with Stevenage.

The winger, believed to be 23-year-old Robin Shroot, who was released by Birmingham City this summer, was due to play for the Iron at Gainsborough Trinity on Wednesday.

However, he has now appeared for Stevenage on three occasions in pre-season, scoring the only goal of the game in their victory over a Fulham XI on Sunday.

Knill is now hopeful another winger will join the United squad next week as trialists are not permitted in Sunday's County Cup clash at Lincoln.

"I didn't realise, but because it's the Lincs Cup, you can only play registered players," he explained.

"The ones we've registered are the only ones allowed to play, so there will be no trialists for that game.

"For Rotherham on Wednesday, we may have someone in for that.

"We hoped one would come in and play on Wednesday, but he decided he wanted to go train with Stevenage instead.

"It's a lot closer to him.

"The other one is away at the moment so hopefully he will be in next Monday."

“Season of struggle again by the look of it. Well done Mr Wharton you have only backed Knill on the Ryan deal. Looks like we will have to sell O'Connor before Wharton even thinks about bringing in a new striker.”
