Scunthorpe Utd: Knill won't change playing style as Iron chase elusive win

Alan Knill is confident his football philosophy will get results for Scunthorpe United – and improve the club's players in the process.

The Iron may be languishing in the lower reaches of the League One table, having not picked up three points in the league since beating Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on April 16, but their manager will not change the way his side play the game, no matter how long their winless run continues.

"We're trying to get a culture and change the previous culture. I want the ball passed to the other end of the pitch," said Knill on the back of Scunthorpe's weekend draw at Walsall, where they twice came from behind to pick up a point.

"If I was a supporter I would rather watch that than someone getting the ball and launching it.

"Obviously we can't do that all the time because we're Scunthorpe, not Barcelona.

"But my job is to make the players better and the only way to do that is by giving them the ball.

"I've got some very good technical players and you can see we move the ball around pretty well.

"I won't change it. That's the way I want to play and if we continue to do what we have been, the win should come.

"It's a long term job this. From when we got in to now, I think we're making pretty good progress."

Although creating plenty of chances, it's the quality of Scunthorpe's finishing which means they currently find themselves in the bottom four.

Criticism of strikers Chris Dagnall and Bobby Grant though is unjust, according to Knill, who says both players have proven themselves capable of scoring goals in the third tier.

"We're fairly confident on the ball, it's just that final bit where we're lacking," he said, when asked if both, with some work, could become clinical finishers.

"They've got six goals and four goals this season, so they're probably among the top strikers in the league.

"I'm a big believer that the harder you work, the luckier you get so we are working pretty hard.

"We've got good character and a belief we can go forward. That's all I can ask."

“I admit I was growing sceptical after the Rochdale performance but I've renewed my faith, after saturday. I still think we will struggle badly without reinforcement up front. Nothing original there, and it' good to see Mr Knill knows what's needed. Is Rick Green still alive?”

“If we can cut out the mistakes at the back, we'll be climbing the league before you know it. Unfortunately at the moment we seem to be repeating the mistakes of the last couple of years, whereby we have to score 3 in order to stand a chance of winning a game. The corner will be turned soon enough though, and I know I'm not alone in preferring to watch proper football rather than the hoofball of last season (which failed us anyway)”

“If we dont start winning soon, it will be interesting to see if he will go more direct - just like Laws did after 18 months of attractive but unsuccessful football in 1997. Dave Moore was the same - decent enough footballl but ultimately it's results that count. What Knill does have on his side is time and a board lacking in ambition - if we go down this year he wont be sacked, as long as we finish mid table and (crucially) the third round of the FA Cup he has a job for life.

I'd expect a win on Saturday - then we'll probably go on a run.

    Up the Iron!”
