Scunthorpe Utd: Lillis warns against putting too much expectation on Dagnall
IRON keeper Josh Lillis has warned against heaping too much expectation on Chris Dagnall this season.
The former Rochdale striker's injury-time equaliser in Sunday's Lincolnshire Senior Cup exit at Blue Square Premier League side Lincoln City was his third of the summer and after largely drawing a blank in his search for a goalscorer, manager Alan Knill a fortnight ago labelled the 25-year-old as a 'player who can score 20 goals'.
The last three seasons the Iron have been in League One, they have been blessed by goalscoring talent including the likes of Billy Sharp, Paul Hayes and Gary Hooper.
But Lillis says viewing Dagnall in the same light is unfair to the Scouser, who, like the majority of his United colleagues, found the going tough in the Championship last term.
"The last two seasons we've gone up we've had a Billy Sharp or a Gary Hooper," acknowledged the Iron stopper.
"Chris Dagnall is a different player to that, but we get just as much out of him from the other side of the game, like his running.
"Possibly there's too much expectancy on Daggers to go get 30 goals.
"He's a good lad and and he knows that he's not really that sort of player, though he'll work hard and create the sort of chances he scored on Sunday."

“Oh dear another relegation battle coming up and likely another one that we're going to lose. Well done Mr Wharton for being the tightest chairman in football.”

“Not BS - economics. At SUFC the transfer window has already closed unless we can sell O'Connor and even then any monies will not be reinvested in players. It never is.
We will get more bigging up of our failures and wingers being strikers but it is interesting that there is an acceptance that Dagnall is not up to it. We always seem to have seasons where we are weak at certain positions but now it looks like we are going to have two seasons in a row weak up front and we all know what happened last season.”

“So what did we sign him for if it wasn't his goal scoring record ?
Alan Knill certainly thinks he is capable of scoring 20 goals, or was that just BS.”
