Scunthorpe Utd: Manager's position has never been under threat
Steve Wharton has backed Alan Knill to lead Scunthorpe United up the League One table during 2012.
And the Iron chairman wants everyone connected with the club to pull together to help make it possible.

OPTIMISTIC: Steve Wharton
United have endured a difficult return to the third tier on the back of relegation from the Championship last season and even dropped into the bottom four during the festive fixture programme.
It's a run of form that has seen Knill – who has won just eight of his 38 games at the helm – come in for criticism from sections of the terraces.
Fans though that travelled to watch the Iron's first win in eight attempts at Hartlepool on Monday were vocal in their backing of the boss.
Speaking exclusively to the Telegraph, the Iron chairman stopped short of issuing his manager with the traditional vote of confidence – but only because such comments often act as 'a kiss of death'.
It is clear though the club's hierarchy are as firmly behind Knill as they have ever been.
"I would say, judge us on our record and we haven't employed many managers during the period I've been involved at the club," said Wharton, when asked if Knill should feel under pressure.
"Alan took on a big job and the things we liked about him when he took over, we still like about him now.
"We believe he's the sort of manager to get a team that will represent Scunthorpe well and be one we can support.
"It's been a difficult run and bad run, but the important thing is to help each other get through the difficult times."
Wharton also confirmed the club would do everything it could to make money available for Knill to strengthen during January, but only for a particular type of player.
"We haven't got any money. For us to bring players in, we have to get some players out," added the Iron chairman, who cited a £4million loss in league revenue as one of the reasons behind United's struggles.
"The only exception, as I've always said, is that we'll do our utmost to find extra money if we can find what I would term 'investment players'.
"They are young players who we believe have a good chance of developing at Scunthorpe and will help us improve, while at the same time could turn what we spend on them into a profit."

“I see some folk can't help themselves from being offended at my rather innocent comments, what's happened to the football fans with a sense of humour?.I haven't even started yet.I hope that The Iron can enjoy more success in the second half of the season but i won't hold my breath. If the three teams that were relegated Blades,Iron & Hammers all go up this season then they will have shown their mettle.Pardon the pun.Murphy your absence is deafening.”

“The best thing Wharton can do is stop referring to the fact we aren't getting £4m from the League Fund any more.
He is the reason why we aren't. Clubites have now swapped Plymouth for Darlington. There is no comparison as there never was between us and Plymouth or us and Darlington. We have a fairly unique structure, one that is only running at 25% capacity of it's capability and we could have continued our success with jeopardising that or the integrity of our financial stability.
We could have stayed in the Championship, we could have brought in cheap players on lower wages just because we were in the Championship. We suffered (are suffering) because of poor signings (mainly by Bara) on poorly negotiated contracts and a lack of spine at the top.
The excuse we fail to attract players is bull, we signed one yesterday who has come here on the back of our reputation of player development and Hooper etc. Being in the Championship would have been an ideal platform to make a few million bringing players through to sell on to bigger clubs and not letting them go for £50k because we are struggling in League One.
The Posh are doing just Dandy AND on a wage bill a third less then our was last season (which again keeps getting rammed down our throats when it has been reduced).
We don't need to sign Tevez, we did just fine with £175k Hooper, £100k Sharp and £50k Keogh and the only person ever to mention a new stadium was our chairman in a PR exercise to try and show ambition.
It took 6 years to put a lift in place for disabled fans yet less than a year to plan a bar extension that benefits only 10% of the fans. Yet we still have slippy floors, cold burgers and ticketing staff that take lunch at the busiest time of ticket sales.
To top it all the club are now advocating kicking out fans just because they get frustrated when Grant decides to shoot from 75 yards or Wright lets a winger through on goal.
Most Clubites see nothing of this because the nearest they get to seeing action at GP is watching a slide show of game photo's on the OWS.
It beggars belief it really does.”

“Firstly Gillshaker ,go back to Bury and take an interest in your own clubs issues. We know Wharton and his puppet board are a joke and take us loyal fans for mugs. His mutterings above are pathetic and he has only his lack of investment and ambition to blame for our current situation.Wharton please go and take all the freeloaders with you. "UP THE IRON"!!!”

“The above photo of Wharton was taken a few seconds after the manager asked if any money was available during the transfer window !!!!!!!
The Chairmans reply was " I WILL FORGET THAT YOU SAID THAT, ARE YOU ASKING FOR THE SACK ???????????????".”

“Gillshakers,
You have hit the nail on the head pal, everything that you state is correct, I should know, being one of these suffering fans for the past 60 years.
Our wealthy Chairman could not wait to see us relegated from the Championship last year, and even sold our best player at the time in January (Woolford), and brought no one in, even though we were heading into the relegation pack. Even though the club had and still has no debt, he is doing the same again this season. Last seasons forced relegation was because the club was being forced by league rules, to having to put seating into the Donny Road stand, because of being in The Championship for three seasons. This would probably have cost about £200,000, but now he has done a 180 degrees turn and is moaning because the club have lost £4 million league and TV fees because of relegation ha ha!
It is also difficult for us supporters to understand, that although the club is debt free, and the Chairman is worth about £60 million, we are heading back into the 4th tier once again, and our fan base of about 6,000, is now standing at about 3,500.
Same as you say Gillshakers, the greed of the Chairman and HIS hand picked toothless board have ruined our club, and lost 45% of it's suffering supporters in one season.
WE WILL BE IN AN EVEN WORSE SITUATION NEXT SEASON, PROBABLY DOWN TO LESS THAN 3,000 FANS, GOD HELP US.”

“The most worrying comment made by Mr.Wharton your chairman is that he only wishes to make available funds for a certain type of player who can be sold on for profit. It looks like this message indicates that you are a selling club and that is why you picked monsieur Knill for the job.It has always been Alan's template to improve young raw talent and then move them on for a tidy profit. He did this at Rotherham & Bury some what recently.Knill reminds me of that hatchet man Margaret Thatcher employed to close down the mines and their communities in the 1980's.Ah yes Mr.McGregor.Keep doing your great work Knilly we certainly don't miss you and the fact Brassey is doing all of the talking to the press proves you are allowing the pressure to get to you and it's beginning to show.Traditionally Scunthorpe United have always been a 4th tier English league football club but have done well in recent years, their golden era is over.I feel for the long suffering supporters of the club not the greedy selfish players who remain and the ponderous board and management team which run your club.”

“Sheffield United, who also dropped into this League don't seem to be struggling and we used to beat the butt off them. Preston are coping better than us. Peterborough are doing well in the NPC with a third less wage bill than we had last season.
You would not have had the £4m loss in revenue had you had ambition to stay up last season. You just put up the white flag and rolled over - £4m equates to £3,300 a week to every player we have on the books yet you got cold feet over wages. You have lost nearly 2000 off the gates which is another £600 per week per player.
I hope your legacy isn't successive relegations and you back Knill to the hilt this month despite what you say above and maybe then you can halt the slide. The club has made an overall profit of £500k over the last five years, lets see some of that spent on the pitch and not on fancy new bars.”
