Scunthorpe United's new-look back line is the perfect platform from which to build, according to Eddie Nolan.

The Iron defender believes loanees Sam Johnstone and Shane Duffy can help provide the base United need to bank their first league victory of the season.

Manchester United keeper Johnstone and Everton's Duffy have both started the last two games, and are likely to feature in today's trip to Walsall.

"Shane and Sam have settled in really well," said Nolan.

"It's different. You're used to seeing Josh (Lillis) barking out orders in goal but Sam has done really well so far.

"I've played with Shane before with Ireland and have always thought he's a good player. He's come in and shown that.

"I think he'll get better the more he plays."

Nolan is pleased to see United adopt an attacking approach under boss Alan Knill.

But although they have been playing football the 'right way', so far the Iron have been getting the wrong results for a team looking to challenge at the top end of the table.

"We seem a lot more solid as a team and we've been playing good, attacking football," said Nolan.

"It's a tough division. Some of the games are horrible, horrible games to play in, but it is a very good league.

"I think everyone's happy with the way we're playing – we're playing football the right way. Maybe it was a bit different under the last regime, but we're playing total football really.

"We've been playing well, and the fans have seen that in the last few home games.

"There is a bit of pressure because we need our first win. Once we get that we will be okay and start picking up more.

"If it goes on and on, then the nerves will start coming, but I don't think it will."

“I reckon Eddie has been one of the brighter points to our early season - always willing to get forward, disciplined and thoughtful in his distribution.

    Up the Iron!”
