Captain Sam Togwell admits describing Scunthorpe United's stagnant season is starting to sound like a 'broken record'.

His post-match put down of the Iron's fifth defeat of the campaign at Bournemouth on Saturday again made reference to defensive mistakes and a lack of a killer instinct going forward.

It's a scenario fans – especially the 227 hardy souls who made the trip to the south coast – are becoming increasingly sick of witnessing.

Yet Togwell hopes they will put those frustrations to once side and continue to back the players – because he's adamant the Iron will come good.

"Every now and then, the inconsistency in our game, or our lack of defending as a team, shows and we concede sloppy goals," he told the Telegraph.

"We've had chances in every game and we're creating enough to be winning more matches.

"It's starting to sound like a broken record.

"I keep saying it, but some time, sooner or later, a team is going to take a spanking.

"But it's probably going to be a 5-4 because we just can't keep enough clean sheets.

"Both goals on Saturday were poor, but the second summed up our day.

"With the first, we've lost the ball from a throw-in up the other end of the pitch and somehow, within 20 seconds, it's ended up in the back of our net.

"No matter what level you play at, whether it's Sunday League or Football League, that can't happen."

Togwell felt defeat at Dean Court was doubly disappointing as it came on the back of a brief upturn in results.

Although beaten by Leyton Orient, the Iron took nine points during October – as many as they managed in August and September combined.

Sadly, Scunthorpe will remember, remember the 5th of November for a return to their careless ways of old.

"I believed we could get a result at Bournemouth," said the midfielder, currently being used as a right-back.

"I can't speak for everyone else, but I feel anywhere we go we can get a good result because I see what we produce in training day in, day out.

"We'd been four games unbeaten and played well in those four games.

"We knew it would be tough, but we came down full of confidence.

"We kept the crowd quiet for long periods, but when you give away goals like that – what can you do.

"You do get games and days where it doesn't click. Bournemouth was one of them.

"No matter what we tried, we just couldn't keep the ball out of our goal and put it into theirs."

“Can I make a suggestion. If the "broken record" is getting everyone down, can we have a total ban on pronouncements from the players until that team has taken "a spanking"? All we get at the moment is promises of greatness followed immediately by apologies and platitudes. Put up or shut up chaps!”

“Yes Sam it is starting to grate a bit. We are a full league below where we were last season when we beat out and out league leaders QPR with a squad not much different to the one at the weekend.

So we as fans have no option but to put it down to attitude and if the players don't care less then we as fans won't. There is much to overcome. Poor signings, Wharton's dismantling and the loss of Adkins but when 11 players jointly go onto a pitch and just make the numbers up then the numbers in the stands will fall just as they did to reflect Wharton's knife wielding.”
