He then left the premises empty-handed.
The shopkeeper, a man in his 40s, sustained slight injuries to his head - caused by glass from broken bottles.
Specially trained officers were deployed in an attempt to locate the offender, who was believed to have left the shop and made his way onto Crosby Street, Berkley Street and George Street.
The offender is described as a white male, 6ft tall, wearing a grey hoodie, dark tracksuit bottoms and a grey ski mask.
Detective Inspector Paul Dixon, who is heading up the investigation, said: "I would like to remind the people of Scunthorpe that incidents in which a firearm is discharged are extremely rare and police are doing all they can to ensure that the offender in this incident is brought to justice.
"At this time police have been unable to locate the firearm shown in the picture, which is believed to be a side-by-side shotgun with a wooden stock and a 'dirty' metal barrel.
"Anyone who may know where this is or can provide police with information is asked to call 101 as a matter of urgency.
"We are also trying to locate the gloves, worn by the offender, which are described as dark gloves with distinctive light coloured fingertips.
"The mask is described as a soft mask which can pulled down across the face.
"At the time of the incident the offender was seen to be carrying a plastic JD Sports black and gold coloured carrier bag.
"I am asking for anyone who may have seen a man, wearing this clothing and carrying a carrier bag of this description in the area of Wells Street in Scunthorpe between 2000hrs and 2100hrs on Friday, to come forward.
"At this time it is unclear if the missing items have been disposed off all in one place or in a number of locations across the local area. It is for this reason I would ask people to check gardens and bins for any of the items. The suspects clothing and footwear may also be found hidden in the same locations. Anyone who locates an item which they feel may be linked to the incident is asked to call police immediately.
"Detectives are still trying to locate the people who the shopkeeper spoke to outside the shop, after the incident had taken place.
"These people, who may have been of Polish nationality, could hold information which is important to the police investigation.
"Those people are asked to call police."
Police searches will be continuing today.
"So if you feel you have information which can help with this investigation, please call Humberside Police tel 101 quoting LOG 697 of 19 October or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111," added Detective Inspector Dixon.
Police have arrested a man in his 20s who remains in custody.
