Scunthorpe bar bids to keep searchlight
THE Light Bar in Scunthorpe is asking permission to keep its signature searchlight switched on – but has been slammed by Friends of the Earth.
Nearly three years after it started beaming owners of the Light Bar, the Dukedom Group is asking for advertising consent, but go-green groups are not impressed.

The powerful spotlight can be seen many miles from the venue, as far as Gainsborough and the Humber Bridge.
It already has a licence from the Civil Aviation Authority
but Friends of the Earth has called the beam a 'gimmick' and questioned the 'unnecessary' use of energy.
The 780-capacity bar in Oswald Road switches on the 4,000 Watt spotlight Friday and Saturday nights from about 11pm until 2am.
The Light Bar opened in November 2005 after a £1-million conversion of a Congregational church with the spotlight on top.
Friends of the Earth regional spokeswoman Jan Clark said: "We would rather people had warm homes rather than using that amount of energy on a Friday and Saturday night."
Natural England said with the amount of ambient light in the area, the searchlight would be unlikely to cause confusion for wildlife while it is shining.
North Lincolnshire Council is expecting to make a decision around September 19, and is accepting comments on the application until tomorrow.

“I agree with Jordan - it's only on for a few hours, what's the problem. Surely it would be better to encourage the big shops & businesses that leave their lights and signage blazing 24 hours a day to turn them off at night. Think of the energy THAT would save!”

“Friends of the Earth need to get a reality check, with everything going on in the world today, a little spotlight is bunching up their knickers this much? Most "go green" campaigns are just an attempt to save money (read: Tesco wind farms to power lights), if The Light can pay the bills and have done all the legal leg work to use it, then there is no problem with them using it, it isn't like it is running 24/7, it is on for 6 hours a week.”

“Not so eco Geeko says it all i have not heard or seen Jan Clark stand up to the Council and every other council in the country at any time in the past especially at Christmas when every shop building and street is lit up in various formats, How many public buildings are lit up at night and every night for hours on end where is Jan Clark then with her unneccesary use of energy. The beam has been there since it opened so why now why all the fuss leave the light alone long may it continue. Oh and yes Jan Clark and Friends of the Earth you are a killjoy.”

“It may be call the LIGHT but when Government preaches to save energy,it is a mockery of the government on energy saving policy,Ithink the owner of the light should spend this money wasted that way, on training their staff to giwe abetter and mor efficient service and buy another ice machine that the customers who want ice,are not told we rung out of ice,in my view it would be afar more intelligent move”
