A Scunthorpe cafe has scooped a county award for culinary excellence.

Delicious on Mary Street won the Taste of Lincolnshire Best Tearoom prize at the Select Lincolnshire and Tastes of Lincolnshire Food and Drink Awards.

Cafe owners Gillian Turner and Richard Stamp attended the ceremony in Lincoln and Mr Stamp said he hoped winning the award would help promote Scunthorpe's town centre.

He said: "Gilly and I are absolutely thrilled.

"It is not just fabulous for Delicious, but also it's great for the town centre.

"It is a great thing for Scunthorpe town centre to get the recognition and will hopefully put Scunthorpe on the culinary map."

The annual awards ceremony has now reached its 14th year and aims to promote the best of Lincolnshire produce.

Mary Powell, from Select Lincolnshire and Tastes of Lincolnshire project, said: "The quality of entries throughout the awards was outstanding.

"An expert panel of judges, including industry experts and mystery shoppers, had the difficult job of selecting the winners.

"The awards are so important, not only for strengthening the county's reputation as the top food spot in the UK, but also for bringing everyone together to celebrate our amazing food and to recognise the outstanding work of the Lincolnshire food industry as a whole."

Delicious, which opened its doors in November 2010, offers a variety of dishes and uses fresh, locally-produced ingredients wherever possible.

As well as operating as a cafe, the outlet also stocks a range of greetings cards and gift ware for the home.
