Scunthorpe jobs at risk after Laneham Street enquiry centre is marked for closure
JOBS in Scunthorpe are at risk after HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) announced the closure of all of its Enquiry Centres.
The 281 centres will be closed by the UK tax authority in an attempt to save money, which could affect jobs at the centre on Laneham Street, Scunthorpe.

HMRC believes the move could save £13million per year by closing the centres, which is due to take effect from 2014.
Lin Homer, HMRC's chief executive, said: "HMRC is dedicated to providing help to customers who need it. This new service will enable us to tailor that help in a way that works better for customers and is more flexible and affordable than the service we currently provide.
"We will give a more specialised phone service for customers whose affairs can be resolved over the telephone, and face-to-face help to those who need it, visiting them at a place convenient to them, saving them both travel and time. HMRC will provide a more modern and accessible service that will target the right support to customers who need it, where and when they want it."
The tax authority said that the number of people using the Enquiry Centres across the UK had halved from five million in 2005-06 to 2.5 million in 2011-12.

“Why the red arrows for Timothylngbit? We are all victims of government bailing out banks & foreign wars that are not exactly defending our shores. If closing these offices means they may miss collecting some tax then that's a good thing. There are no poor MP's or Lords, how many have fingers in banks & weapons manufacturers? And to keep my roof over my head each month means I have nothing left. Petrol Tax, Food Tax, Heating Tax, Water Tax, VAT, Income Tax, but hey!, as long as we've given £16 billion to African Warlords, that's ok. As long as there is a feeding frenzy for lawyers over a £50 billion railway, that's ok. As long as we give £50 million to Brussels each day in exchange for some crazy laws, that's ok.
Don't get me started on tax, I may self combust.”
