Scunthorpe man has 'appalling' criminal record with 280 convictions
A serial offender with a string of 280 convictions had an “appalling” criminal record that stretched to 29 pages, a court heard.
Colin Monaghan, 41, of Frodingham Road, Scunthorpe, admitted burglary between June 24 and 27 and stealing nine jumpers, valued at £54, from the town’s Westgate Department Store on August 4.

Martin Howarth, prosecuting, told North Lincolnshire Magistrates’ Court that Monaghan smashed a window at the store and stole 25 lighters, silver tankards and trophies, valued at £1,200, after forcing a cabinet.
David Rix, mitigating, said: “His record is appalling. He has got to come to terms with his drug addiction and his offending.”

“I am with Sparks2400 they should be in prison and face real tough punishment in the form of hard labour. It's about time this country said if you commit a crime you loose your right to use the human rights law. If they were kept busy with hard labour they wouldn't get bored and need play stations and sky tv!”

Mind you we took a bit of a pasting on the other post! We seem to be seen as judgemental!

“Whilst we rehabillitate rather than punish, then this will always be the norm. We should use the American way that they do in Arizona and Texas where they are treated without normal rights with the attitude of, "if you don't like it, don't come back!"
The "more to be pitied than scolded" attitude of our judicial system breeds serial offenders who laugh at, and have no fear of, our laws.
As a young soldier who had been on the wrong side of military law, I can speak without contradiction that punishment has a far greater impact than rehabillition, especially when you know you've done wrong. I have no doubt that this individual knows right from wrong, he just has not had the opportunity to be "put back on the rails", (as it was explained to me during numerous and rather strenuous, chilly and wet exercise periods in the snow, at 04:30am in Dec 1982).
It took me less than the fourteen day sentence to see the errors of ways, perhaps Colin might be a fine upstanding citizen today had he been given the same direction as myself?”
