Laura Standland, manager of the neighbouring New Look store, said: "It is not competition for us because it is a completely different shop.

"I would definitely welcome more companies coming into Scunthorpe and it will bring more trade to Scunthorpe if more empty units are filled. It will benefit everybody.

"I don't know if this is a shop that is going to bring more people to the centre, but at least the shop will not be empty.

"I don't think it affects us whether or not it is empty next door, but we will see what happens. Trade depends on the weather and the beginning of last week was not great with the snow, but we are doing well."

Debbie Sellens, a supervisor at The Works discount book store on High Street hoped bigger companies could be attracted into the town centre.

She said: "It is a good thing the shop is being filled. We could do with more things to entice people into the town but it is a big unit and I am pleased it is going to be filled.

"Anything that is bringing in new investment is good.

"If the council carries on with free parking, that will bring a lot more trade into the town and it would help us."

A spokesman for PerfectHome confirmed a store would be opening in Scunthorpe next month.

“I see that our friend Mr Green has a rival, as our other resident "Ten Bob Messingham Millionaire" is back online. Not heard your drivelling diatribe for a long time but I see that you have used all of that superior brain power of yours to create a new pseudo name for yourself, must have been difficult.

Maybe you two should hook-up with Sister Wendy as he also seems to be in hibernation, and then report back with your master-plan for this "dump" of a town that you enjoy slating off, but still live in!!!”

“I find this a poor example of the type of retailer we should be attracting into the town. They are nothing more than Wonga with doors.

The traders should be looking at why larger retailers don't want to be in the town centre, the national situation of High Street Trading and ways to head off internet shopping. Free parking will have minimal impact and is closing the stable doors as far as the problem is concerned.

The High Street is dead in the water and there has been no real good news for it in years. Third rate retailers like Primark epitomise where we are at and to laud Pawn Brokers, Bargain Pound shops (there is another Home Bargains opening somewhere in the area) and bakers is a sign of how far it has degenerated.

What doesn't help is the leader of the retailers operates on line retailing which has accounted for nearly a quarter of the loss of footfall in the UK's High Streets.”
