WHEN David Cameron announced Britain was going to export itself out of the recession, many people bemoaned the fact "nobody in Britain makes anything any more".

Considering there are thousands of businesses that do indeed still "make things", this statement is in itself misleading.

But it also fails to recognise how the service industry is one of the country's biggest exporters.

Hull-based SHEilds Ltd has long been exporting its expertise overseas. Today, about 70 per cent of its business comes from exports.

Its Health And Safety Consultancy, which was founded in 1995 by Mike Shields, was originally created to develop solutions for Hull and the surrounding areas.

After ten years of trading success, SHEilds began to see opportunities in the export market and in 2005 opened an office in the heart of Dubai allowing it to gain a strong foothold in the increasing international market.

Shortly afterwards, it opened an office in Qatar and in 2007 this was followed with the opening of branches across India.

More recently, SHEilds has established offices in South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria and Abu Dhabi.

Mr Shields said: "Our main objective is to ensure quality training is accessible by all, thereby raising people's knowledge and make the world of work and home a safer place through training.

"70 per cent of our business from a £4m-plus turn over emanates from these well-established bases, which allow us to deliver globally both e-learning and classroom training solutions, making us one of the largest NEBOSH providers in the world."

SHEilds training solutions are delivered by its 50-plus employees, most of whom are based in SHEields' office in Priory Tec Park, in Hessle.

Mr Shields paid tribute to his staff and their commitment, without which he said the company's success "would not have been possible".

He said: "Their skills, talents and expertise are fully recognised and appreciated by the senior management team."

Already reaching all corners of the globe, SHEilds is not about to rest on its laurels and is actively seeking new overseas markets to tap into.

Mr Shields said: "As part of our thirst to investigate new marketing opportunities and build on our current platform of attending, as exhibitors, major events in the UK, Dubai, India and South Africa, we will be attending a major event in the US in the near future and are making arrangements for Rio in Brazil."
