A BUSY town centre junction is to become a no-go area for late-night weekend traffic.

Britannia Corner in Scunthorpe is set to become traffic free between 10pm and 4am at weekends to make the area safer for thousands of revellers.

North Lincolnshire Council is to act upon a police request to consider closing parts of the four roads leading to the corner between 10pm and 4am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Council chiefs have already held talks with taxi operators after a spate of accidents involving tipsy revellers who have walked into the road without paying heed to the traffic.

Peter Scott, head of safer roads for the council, revealed a quarter of the accidents occurred between 10pm and 4am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The closure would see chicanes on Oswald Road, Frodingham Road and High Street which would permit access to traffic, primarily taxis.

Road blocks would be in place near the Lidl supermarket on Doncaster Road, just after Schnapps bar on Frodingham Road, and at the junction of Dunstall Street and High Street. The road would also be closed just after The Blue Bell on Oswald Road.

Mr Scott said: "In addition to the potential order and road safety benefits, the council will be seeking views from people as whether the closure improves the night-time environment in the area.

"One on the main problems is illegal and inappropriate parking by taxis, many of which are from our of town. "This leads to road safety and public order problems as people compete for taxi services."

“Scunthorpe now known for stupid people who let a more stupid council waste large amounts of money on silly projects . do they have shares in taxi company's and bus company's. They seem to look after them. Why have the bus company's been made to move bus stops from front of mini roundabouts this adds to traffic hold ups. rate payers should not pay for this as bus company's are now all private and should be made to move them to better locations .”
