MESSINGHAM SANDS: Saturday’s Silverfish Open on the Swan Pond saw sections shuffled around to less favourable areas of the lake in order to gain as much shelter from the conditions as possible. Despite this, the fish did not appear to be affected by the fall in temperature and icy rain.

Brigg angler Keith Harrison made the best of his draw on peg 13 with a winning 30lb net of good quality perch, roach and skimmers. He even included a specimen-sized perch over 3lb, taken on pole fished maggot.

With just over a pound separating the top three anglers and 24lb-plus needed to win every section, the competitors were left wondering what the weights would have been like if conditions had been better.

Three matches remain in the series and although the leader can’t be caught, no less than six anglers are in a position to take the second spot.

Sunday proved to be a good day for Jordan Mesner and Tony Noon. With most people struggling to find bites on the Islands Lake in a freezing cold wind, pegs 62 and 63, either side of a large bed of reeds, were very productive for small carp on the pole. Tony came out ahead with 64lb to Jordan’s 59lb in a fairly even contest.

The Oak Tree Pond has been the pick of the lakes this week as carp and skimmers have fed well. Sweetcorn has probably been the best bait for sorting out the carp from the skimmers and quite a few fish approaching double figures have been landed, although 2lb to 4lb seems to be the average size.
