FINALISTS in this year's Pub Idol brought the competition to a close on a high note.

A fantastic 14 singers took to the stage at Reeds Hotel, Barton-Upon-Humber, and while all wowed the assembled crowds, there was one who really shone.

In a talent-packed final, teenager Sophie Dunbar, 18, of Alan Crescent, Scunthorpe, was the gifted vocalist who grabbed the judge's attention above all others.

"I was absolutely gobsmacked when the judges announced the winner," said Sophie.

"There was so many talented people in the final so I never thought that I win.

"I feel really proud to be crowned the Pub Idol champion."

The John Leggott College student said the atmosphere at Monday night's final was electric.

"The crowd were fantastic I took ten of my friends and family along with me and me friends even helped me to sing my last song when I had won.

"I am looking forward to spending my prize money - I will be treating some of my friends and family to a celebratory meal I think and then I will be hitting the shops for some serious shopping."

Females absolutely dominated the final, with just a handful of men making it through to the final stage.

With each act given the chance to perform two songs, the singing competition lasted long into the night, finally finishing at around midnight.

Compere Ian McLane said: "It was a fantastic night, there were some brilliant performances and a deserving winner.

"The punters really seemed to enjoy it and there was a brilliant atmosphere.

"It was a very late night for everyone involved but I think everyone had a good time."

The full line-up of performers on the night was winner Sophie Dunbar, Sophia Kokkini, Michelle Wheelwright, Luke Palmer, Victoria Taylor, Ian Helps, Emma Watson, Laura Rose, Rachel Lewis, Kayleigh Hotchin, Tammy Hunter, Emma Jordan, Sam Wardle, Ralph Toppin and Julie Wynne.

Talented Sophie won the top prize of £500, she said she was delighted to have been picked by the panel as the brightest star in the competition.
