White hankies were waved in the crowd and Nigel Adkins masks donned as many Southampton fans lamented the departure of the former Scunthorpe United boss - sacked by the Saints on Friday.

During last night's top flight 0-0 draw with Everton, spectators showed their support for Nige, who many feel was hard done by.

However, the powers-that-be felt they wanted a new man at the helm to help them steer clear of relegation.

International midfielder Grant McCann (@grantmccann11), who played under Nigel Adkins at Scunthorpe United, Tweeted yesterday: "White hankies out at St Mary's tonight so I will be waving one in front of the tele in respect to Nigel Adkins."

“After being as surprised (and upset) about his sacking I have come round to thinking that Adkins has really benefitted from being at Southampton as much as they have really.

He has the whole country supporting him and amdiring what he's acheived - another prem side will come in for him if he waits.

He has the best reputation in the business for getting sides promoted very quickly - there will be plenty of sleeping giants and ambitions Championship sides begging for his services.

So, he's not in too bad a position at all really. Especially when you consider the big pay off and where he came from!

Adkins always sees the positives are there are plenty to be seen at the moment.

He's an amazing talent, so I doubt he'll be in tears for very long.”

“Spot on justneil and in any case last night's so called 'support for Nige' by the Saints fans turned out to be a bit of a damp squib and not the event it was billed to be. Decent game though!”

“That may be just a step too far for the latest batch of journos who look after the ST.

They are all snowed in on Laneham Street and are too busy peddling stories about seasonal weather conditions BUT it is the transfer window, we do need to get better players in, we don't have any money, nobody wants the crud we have, it's one in one out - you don't need to be a two bit hack to see what will happen come the 31st.”

“Ok he was a great manager here at scunny, but all I ever read lately on this site is PAST manager FORMER player etc etc
how about finding more interesting news like, transfer gossip, funding, what plans are afoot, etc etc etc, surely life at scunny cant be that dead and buried that we have to dwell on what was and what might have been.”
