Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions’ asset Gary Irving is set to return to the club after being released by Workington Comets.

His availability came as a surprise, after he had wracked up a Premier League average of over five-and-a-half for the Cumbrian side.

But Scorpions’ Promoter Rob Godfrey acted quickly to ensure he didn’t lose out to another Premier League club.

Irving will miss out on the trip to Ipswich because of the ‘three-day’ rule for team declarations but, subject to BSPA approval, will line up at Sheffield on Thursday.

Speaking about the signing Godfrey said “It all came as a bit of a surprise. Gary had been wracking up the points for Workington and showed a Premier League average of 5.64 in last week’s Speedway Star. For a rider of that ability to become available on a 3.23 team-building average mid-season is virtually unheard of and an opportunity we simply couldn’t turn down.

“It’s a shame for Tom Young and Stefan Nielsen because we were happy to give them a bit of Premier League experience. However, whilst everyone involved was aware the arrangement might not last to the end of the season we had no idea this opportunity would come up so quickly. It goes without saying that we still hold Tom and Stefan in very high regard. They are currently the cream of our young assets that haven’t got Premier League places and Stefan will still turn out for us at Ipswich on Wednesday. It goes without saying that should we need a three-point rider the pair are at the top of the list. Their opportunities will come, that is for sure, because they are a talented pair of racers.

“However, I have a duty to the fans and, with us hoping to mount a serious challenge for league honours, we just had to sign Gary. Workington have suggested a drop in form as the reason for his release but he had just one zero in seven races over the weekend and scored nine points (including two bonus points). To me that is a lot of important third places and that is all you can ask your lowest average rider to produce. Gary is a born racer, loves riding the dirt line at the Eddie Wright Raceway and has always been very popular with our fans. He is great friends with several of the current side and will fit in very well. I’m sure that will only have a knock-on effect on Gary too.

“Gary should be the last piece in the jigsaw. We have sixteen league meetings remaining, a quarter of which are this week. I fully expect to start climbing the league table from now on!”
