Steel Workers Attend Cinema Summit
STEEL workers have spent this morning in a special presentation about how Corus will survive the current global economic crisis.
Hundreds of employees have packed into Vue Cinema for the special showings, delivered by works site director Sean Lyons.
-

All employees will have the chance to see the presentation, which will be screened twice a day for the next two weeks.
Graham Brooks, deputy chairman of the works multi-works committee, was one of the first to make the trip to Vue.
He said: "A lot of people went along fearing the worst, but they came away feeling more assured after the works boss gave them the facts.
"It was an excellent presentation," he said.
The 90-minute briefing session called Weathering the Storm is the biggest-ever summit of the town's steelmen and women.

“danny, you are not on your own in thinking like that. credence should not be given to those whom would love to see thousands un employed and families in hardship.”

“to all the people making negative comments with regards to the current situation at corus, especially those that work there. i too am employed by corus and worried about the future for the plant, i have a wife and a mortgage and dont mind saying without my wage we would struggle financially and probably lose our home so to those that say shut it down the sooner the better etc... you sound like bitter ill educated people who really should know better. what would happen if corus shut down?? how many businesses in the local area rely on work given to them by corus, 6000 people may well lose their jobs and yes there are other jobs but how many businesses would survive if corus closed??? to give these people jobs? not too many thats for sure and those that our left how many people would apply for same job? hundreds! its not just about us corus workers and contractors who may i add are invaluable and contribute just as much, its about the whole town the repercussions of corus closing are massive, so we all need to pull together contribute positive ideas and hope that some day soon this recession ends and we can rebuild for the future, so micko before you make a comment again perhaps you might think a little and even you may have a good idea tucked away somewhere, this is real life serious and peoples futures we are talking about here. i for one would take a pay cut for the forseeable future to secure our long term job security and ensure that redundancies are kept to a minimum!! good luck to everyone affected by this dire situation i hope the outcome is a good one for as all, the town needs it!!”

“6000, steelworkers,& contractors, average £100 per month council tax. wher do the council make up the shortfall, put remaining tax payers tax up, cut services. Disposable income spent by the 6000 in scunthorpe, what happens to the shops where this money is spent. To all the great thinkers of the world who say close the steelworks, and get rid of the jobs, history, and the small bit of prosperity there is in this town, grow up, shut up and concentrate your energies somewhere else.”
