WITH most of the country under a blanket of snow, Scunthorpe Steelers basketball team made the short trip to Doncaster on Sunday afternoon to face Danum in a DABA Cup quarter-final.

With a depleted squad of only seven players, including several carrying injuries, it would be a tricky encounter for the Steelers.

Despite this, the Scunthorpe team started well, racing out to an early lead with four of the starting five getting on the scoresheet in the first quarter.

A slow second quarter saw the Steelers trail at the half-time interval, 38-34.

A heroic third quarter effort from Tomas Tolisius, Robin Hewson and Joe Brough would effectively put the game out of reach for Danum, as the Steelers held on for a 78-71 victory.

Tolisius led all scorers with 29, Hewson also contributed 21 points just days after having stitches removed from the top of his head.

The Steelers will host trials for the Humberside Under-13 squad at The Pods, between 10am and noon on Saturday, February 9.

Any young players, boys or girls, born in 2000 or 2001 are welcome to come and try out for the team.

Humberside head coach Liam Wordsworth will be in attendance at the session to make his selections for who to take forward to his squad.
