VISITORS have been queuing to visit North Lincolnshire's most unusual tourist attraction – the Corus

steelworks.

During 2008 more than 2,800 people were given official guided tours of the works, the highest number since steel-making began in the town.

Site director Sean Lyons said: "We're very proud of our world-class operation here in Scunthorpe and we welcome the opportunity to show our customers and other visitors what makes our steel so special."

Among last year's visitors were 1,400 students from schools, colleges and universities across Britain.

Mr Lyons said: "It is extremely encouraging more and more youngsters from the area are showing an interest in what we do here and our employees are able to have a positive impact on their education by bringing their course text-books to life."

And Martin Monks, course leader for applied science at Scunthorpe's John Leggott College, said students have visited Corus for the past two years and it is a vital part of our studies as the company is a great example of science in action.

"Students are amazed at the sheer scale of the plant and quantities of raw and finished materials," he said.

“Why wait then go around it on a train? Security don't care who comes on site so just come in and wander around the place as you like! You can see more that way!”

“It's very pleasing to see the Steelworks used for educational purposes. The people of Scunthorpe should be very proud of their industrial heritage, so it is nice for the works to be shown in a positive light. The news coming out of Corus has been a lot to be desired at the moment with the possible threat of job losses and possible wage cut, so it's good that something positive is being reported by the Telegraph and that Corus is putting something back into the local community. My roots are in the North East and I feel just like the Redcar site- not enough of the positive aspects of the Steel Industry are reported by a biased media, who focus purely on the negative.”
