Alabi, 18, has not played for the Potters' first-team, but is a regular for their Under-18 and Under-21 sides.

A big, strong front man, Scunthorpe had the opportunity to see the London-born player at first hand this week.

Alabi played an hour of the behind-closed-doors friendly between the two clubs at the Britannia Stadium on Monday, coming on to replace Cameron Jerome during the first-half.

After that game, Iron assistant boss Russ Wilcox said United had hoped to forge links with the Premier League club to enable them to bring in players on loan.

Dave Wright, manager of the Potters' Academy, said Alabi had impressed for his club's Under-21s this term.

“An opportunity like this is potentially fantastic for James’ development,” said the former Portsmouth and Crystal Palace midfielder.

“It doesn’t surprise us, however, as he’s been doing very well and it’s nice to see him pushing on and getting an opportunity at such a high level.”

“FHall....there's not knowing a piece of information and asking those who might, or there's not knowing a piece of information and pretending to know when you don't, then looking like a complete tool when your assessment is shown to be incorrect.

    Take your pick”

“No idea about this guy, thinking he will be played as a target man to give a better holding in the last third. Interesting that Jennings comes back from loan hoping to make an impact in the reserves and break into the first team and then we get a striker on loan. Still only one month so Conor shouldnt fret too much.”

“Thanks Chris, insightful as I've not heard the term before.

Looks like a tank by the way, can't believe he's on Stoke's books....”

“It means we have loaned a player who is a youth. Simples.”

“ironite - a youth loan means Alabi will still be eligible to play for Stoke City in non first-team matches, eg reserves or Under-21s. First-team games of the club where the player is on loan though take precedence.”

“Great...what's a "youth loan"? Can he play in the first team?”
