Success in bid to help drinkers
THE number of people needed help for alcohol abuse has fallen slightly according to health chiefs.
Last summer, on average between 10 and 12 people a week were asking for help for the first time with alcohol issues.

A new scheme has helped slash the number of people seeking help for drinking problems.
The drop has been attributed to new measures put in place by NHS North Lincolnshire who were forced to put in place interim measures to help tackle the problem - while plans for a new alcohol only service was being developed.
Ian Cameron deputy head of safer neighbourhood (substance misuse) said: "It's too early to see a result on our National Indicator targets but locally the number with alcohol problems being referred or self referring to the existing substance misuse service has fallen from an average of 10 to 12 per week to seven."
Mr Cameron said he did not know why there was an increase last summer.
However, until then the PCT did not have separate figures for alcohol and drug misuse - they were placed in the same category.

“Dear Chris ex scunthorpe, which Priory are you in? Ashby or Re-hab? Alcholism is a sad excuse! Every sensible person knows when to slow down. I love a good booze and all it encludes Ie. a good night in the local or a friendly sports event, or even the dreaded meals the wife invites her mates and husbands round for.
Dependance is all the individuals head,so stop being bitter (sorry for the pun) and get a grip you sorry soul.”

“The usual crop of idiot commentary from hypocrites who are as at much risk as anyone else of developing an addiction; I¿d like to point out a few things to some of the other ¿contributors¿ who display an unfathomable level of ignorance about alcoholism. Nobody sets out to become an alcoholic; it is an insidious, progressive illness. Alcohol is a legal and lethal addictive drug, which if it was discovered today would be a Class A drug. There are as many reasons why and how people become addicted to alcohol as there are people who become addicted. Unlike heroin addicts, alcoholics cannot just stop drinking and go ¿cold turkey¿ ¿ sudden withdrawal is dangerous and life-threatening; supervised, chemical detoxification is necessary ¿ and that¿s the easy bit. Staying stopped is the hard bit and is a never-ending battle against wall-to-wall advertising, ignorance of those who know nothing about the illness ¿ and it is an illness, a culture which encourages taking alcohol almost from the moment a person is able to pick up a glass and countless governments, who refuse to look at the scientific evidence from a public health perspective and view it and other, less harmful ¿recreational¿ drugs as a criminal justice issue. Anyone and everyone is at risk of becoming addicted to alcohol, just ask any recovering alcoholic. All it takes is one bad decision, one traumatic incident, or countless mental health issues which run through a society riddled with complex social problems; the misery of deprivation and inequality, the haves and the have-mores and the rest of us whose sole role in society is to ¿consume¿.
I owe a great deal to countless caring and gifted people since I entered rehab and recovery over three years ago. Recovery is hard work, takes time and is sometimes very painful. I had a very successful professional career until I suffered a number of traumatic life events. My alcohol addiction nearly cost me my life, it also gave me a new perspective on life in general, a new reason for living, a rebirth, almost. Alcohol kills far, far more people than the whole spectrum of illegal drugs, yet funding for treatment is far less in comparison. Successful treatment nearly always involves a series of failures as recovery is a process of learning and change, so those families who are affected by a loved one becoming addicted should never give up hope.
Society gives us alcohol, society should be prepared to treat it¿s consequences without judgement and without fail.”
