It was a case of Swiss roll and rock as Hull's Little Switzerland stormed to victory in the annual GSMG Rock Open at the Scunthorpe Baths Hall on Saturday night.

It was the first time in five years the Rock Open was back at the rebuilt Baths and even the decision to shut the bars at 11pm did not stop the contestants and the fans from having a stomping time.

For singer Simon Binks, 22, and his three fellow Swiss guards, their victory in the battle of the bands – now in its 30th year – was a historic one.

Little Switzerland became the first band from Hull to win The Open in 25 years and only the second since the legendary Gargoyles in 1986.

Afterwards Simon told What's On: "It was a fantastic experience to win the GSMG Rock Open.

"It was made even more memorable by the venue. The Baths Hall really is as spectacular as it looks.

"Winning the Rock Open has helped the band to make a step in the right direction and having only been gigging for two months, it's great to be able to say we won."

Little Switzerland are the product of a long-standing youth project in Hull called The Warren which offers a free recording studio and rehearsal rooms for up and coming bands and even runs its own record label Warren Records.

Runners-up spot on Saturday went to Scunthorpe quartet The Cave Toads who in 2008 also won the Scunthorpe Telegraph's other talent show Class Act.

History repeated itself for Lincoln-based foursome Postcards From Places That Don't Exist who finished in third place.

Front man James Styring finished third the last time he entered The Open with his previous band Sevenday Weekend in 2008.

James told What's On: "We had a great night! The Baths is a stunning venue with a brilliant sound and a great crowd."

Also taking part in Saturday's final, sponsored by the Lincolnshire Co-operative, United Health and North Lindsey College, were Scunthorpe's Hawk of Fury, The Rickashays and The Handsome Custards.

So how did our six finalists rate on the night? Our guest reviewer Dan Gouldthorpe gives up his opinions from his ring side seat.

Dan writes: "The final, at last, and what a night. And for anyone who wasn't there I can say that the new Baths Hall was well and truly christened.

"Postcards from Places looked extremely confident and started the night with their own solid dose of rock 'n' roll.

"The Postcards proved tonight that they were the original good-time band.

"There was a palatable shiver of expectation from the assembled masses as Scunthorpe's own electro/ rock noise terrorists Handsome Custards took the stage.

"Owning the stage completely and making it their own, this is a band that you simple cannot take your eyes from.

"After the dust had settled Scunthorpe three piece The Rickashays took to the stage, this time without the broken strings of the semi finals.

"Performing a solid set of acoustic, bouncy little numbers infused in places with ska rhythms and benefiting from a near perfect sound, the band performed their numbers with a confident swagger. Pure enjoyment.

"As if juxtaposed to this, as all perfect Open finals should be, was the epic metal of Scunthorpe four piece Hawk of Fury.

"Filling the Baths Hall completely with their huge sound The Fury delivered a set of their own tight metal numbers, created to make your head bang.

"I thought this band really performed well, doom-laden riffs and shredding guitars combined with the soaring leads of Jon Hunt made for some epic music.

"Little Switzerland exploded onto stage quite literally in a shower of confetti. Sounding like a band I could see on a main stage at a festival the lads flew through a tight set of energetic stomping indie numbers, sounding in places like The Maccabees.

"The Cave Toads looked very comfortable performing their songs effortlessly."
