SCUNTHORPE United capitulated, conceding five to local rivals Hull City in the derby day clash at Glanford Park.

Matty Fryatt slotted home from close range in the fifth minute to leave a new-look Iron side reeling.

And five minutes into the second half, Aaron Mclean latched on to a sloppy header from Michael Nelson to roll in from a couple of yards out and give Hull a decisive lead.

But moments later, the game was back in the balance courtesy of Joe Garner's towering header.

The game would turn in the visitors' favour on 73 minutes, Bobby Grant tripping Andy Dawson in the box to concede a spot-kick which Fryatt duly put away.

Three swiftly became four, Mclean netting his second with seven minutes left on the clock, prior to Fryatt scoring a third late on.

Scunthorpe handed a debut to striker Lee Miller and centre-half Nelson as they bid to secure a first win on home soil in over five months.

On-loan Nottingham Forest forward Garner made his home debut for the Iron in a derby encounter which saw both sides in contrasting form.

United continued to search for an elusive three-point haul, for the first time in five league games, while the Tigers were 13th going into the game after their early season struggles, looking to maintain a five-game unbeaten run in the Championship.

And there was an element of revenge in the air at Glanford Park, following United's last-gasp 1-0 win over Hull at the KC Stadium back in November.

But the Tigers would not fire a blank this time, Robert Koren linking with Mclean on the left before finding an unmarked Fryatt in the box.

The former Leicester City man did the rest with a neat finish to give the visitors the early advantage.

A shell-shocked Iron attempted to gain a foothold in the game, with Paul Reid's header, from a corner, going past the far post.

The lively Mark Duffy was causing problems on the right for ex-Scunthorpe player Dawson, sending a half-volley straight at Hull keeper Brad Guzan in the 33rd minute, after brushing off the attentions of the left-back.

United were looking more and more dangerous heading toward half-time, but they could not breakthrough prior to the interval.

Despite losing, a warm half-time reception was given to the home side, who had shown plenty of grit and determination, while also showing more endeavour going forward than in previous games.

But, as in the first half, the Iron conceded early in the second period, following a defensive mix-up.

Under pressure and facing his own goal, Nelson nodded a header past Iron stopper Josh Lillis and into the path of Mclean who slotted home to give his side breathing space.

That two-goal cushion was short-lived, Garner leaping highest to head home from six yards, following Duffy's in-swinger from the left.

But, following Grant's clumsy challenge on Dawson, Fryatt struck from the spot, despite Lillis getting a hand to it.

And the visitors began to run away with the game in the closing stages, Mclean netting a fourth after a low ball in from the left.

Fryatt netted his third in the final seconds of the contest, as the home team epitomised a side whose spirit was broken.

It was a defeat that left the Iron seven points adrift of safety after Crystal Palace's 1-0 win over Middlesbrough.

And with games running out for United, it was a stark warning that the new players need to gel - and quickly.

    “john jeffery, Northants

It's true that our support fell just below 4,000 for two seasons(96 and 97), but of all the things to try and have a go at Hull City for, lack of support is a weak one.

Considering that we averaged 16,847 in League Two, 18,025 in League One, 19,841 in the Championship and capacity(24,816) in the Premier League, with a record attendance of over 55,000, raising the issue of the two worst seasons in the clubs history as an indication of our support is fairly lame.

Boothferry Park was falling down, much as we loved it, it was a complete dump at the end, in fact, it was not dissimilar to the way Glanford Park looks now.”

“What's all this pre occupation with Hull City? We are Scunny fans and should be talking about OUR team. All this guff about Hull detracts from the real issues of our failing club. Wharton and Baraclot will be loving the distraction!!!”

I think this article, from November 2010 sums Hull City up - this chap recieved a standing ovation with David Lloyd not long ago...although not by 3/4's of their current average gate in all fairness!

“All those Hull City fans who have latched on to success but were nowhere to be seen a few years ago should remember a few things:
Boothferry Park was a new ground after the war with its own railway station
Through lack of support the club fell down the divisions
    Gates were down to 3/4000
You had to sell off the front of Boothferry Park to a supermarket to raise funds.
Half of Boothferry Park was closed- unsafe. It became a tip
You were forced to sell the whole ground
You were locked out because you failed to pay the rent.
The Council bought you a ground share with a rugby club
    You flirted with adminstration
And then your guardian angels arrived bearing gifts -success was bought
The city turned to football again
Now you may think you are a BIG club but heed this warning - I live up the road from Rushden & Diamonds FC. Remember them? A rich man arrived there, built a nice ground and suddenly we had football fans (does this sound familiar?)
The club even knocked the Iron out of the FA Cup when a non-lge outfit
They were destined to go places
BUT the richman tired of his plaything and took up a new hobby - taking his money with him.
Gates are now down to 1200!!!!
The moral of this story is gloat whilst you can but for God's sake keep your benefactors sweet!!! You dont have a ground to sell next time”

“Ha ha, casual. Oh dear me. Another overweight, replica top-sporting plastic who's watched Green Street a few too many times. Good luck in your mission to learn how to become a football supporter-the swap from watching rugger week in week out must be tough.”

“I'll post the link to the thread you refer to (that I responded with 'well wishes' yesterday evening, with humility) for the second time Boothferry Casual....the response has been unreplied to for almost 24 hours now because the game is over and you won - fair play and all the very best for the rest of the season, I keep EVERYTHING crossed that you beat PNE.

If you expect me to pollute every thread on your local rags newspaper, in the pursuit of some sort of 'needle' you will be found wanting...a GENUINE supporter winding up an opposition team before a match is surely not that uncommon in Hull...is it? Get over it - you won F.H.S. but you'll have to invent a few more books and pretend to have bit more footballing history before the rest of football outside Hullberside takes City seriously as a club.

'Casual' indeed - Im guessing your 40 plus? *rolls eyes*
