FULL TIME: Bristol City 2 Scunthorpe United 0
A LACKLUSTRE Scunthorpe United crashed 2-0 at fellow strugglers Bristol City in their Championship clash at Ashton Gate.
David Clarkson gave the home side a 14th minute lead, with Nicky Maynard netting his second goal in two games on 49 minutes.
United were unchanged after coming from behind to beat Sheffield United 3-2 at Glanford Park on Tuesday.
Iron boss Ian Baraclough kept faith with the same starting XI, a move mirrored by the hosts following their 3-1 win at Watford in midweek.
Former United midfielder Martyn Woolford faced his old club for the first time since his January transfer window move.
And ex-Robin Lee Miller also returned to an old stomping ground after two years in the Bristol area.
Despite two wins and a draw in their last three matches, United headed into the game without an away goal in four league fixtures.
Equally, the Robins were not exactly in red-hot scoring form on home soil, having failed to score at Ashton Gate since New Year's Day.
But it was the latter who would snap their barren spell first, Clarkson whipping in an inswinging left flank cross which eluded everyone to go in off the far post.
A tepid first half delivered little in the way of entertainment and shots on goal, with Joe Garner's wayward drive and Michael Nelson's header straight at City keeper David James the only moments of any note in attack.
The hosts were equally inept going forward and, Clarkson's goal apart, they too failed to take the game by the scruff of the neck.
But with little to separate the two sides, the visitors found themselves two down, a pre-planned Woolford corner from the right finding Maynard in the area just after the break.
The forward did the rest, with acres of space to do it in, giving the home side a comfortable lead.
Showing few signs of recreating the comeback spirit of Tuesday night, the Iron toiled as they attempted to get back into the game, the closest they came to doing so coming from substitute Abdisalam Ibrahim's shot straight at James, following a well-worked counter-attack.
There was little urgency about either side as the match meandered through the second period.
That was until Liam Fontaine forced Ben Gordon to clear off the line after his header across goal, from a right wing corner, looked destined for the back of the net in the 75th minute.
Scunthorpe threatened sporadically, Garner's header from the edge of the box, following Josh Wright's free-kick on the right, forcing James to scramble across his line before watching it go by the far post.
The impressive Maynard sent a dipping shot on to the top of the net as City seeked a third in the closing stages of a game Scunthorpe never looked like winning.

“When Ive correctly predicted wins for the Iron, Ive not seen you on here thanking me for giving Unitedm 'blessing'...as for England - what has that got to do with SUFC?
Keep behind the team mate - I'm just a regualr supporter with the ounce of passion to keep posting on here.
Up the Iron!”

“Where does it say I believe what you say is gospel? or where i said i was looking at you as some guiding light? Delusions of grandour very common amongst those that refer to themselves in the third person as you did several times.
Do I go to games? when I can.
Do I boo? on occasion, when it looks like a player is not giving his best.
Do I boo when we go one down? not always no, if the lads are trying the best but simply playing a better team then no, i don't. I would be more likely to boo manager and board but they are not on the pitch. Booing constantly like some idiots when the chaps are trying their best seems a little counter-productive.
You seem to be patting youself on the back for predicting a Scunny defeat... hmm.. well done mate! I am amazed you managed it, what with defeats being such a rarity this season. That definitely proves you are a real fan.”

“Mate - I'm negative when we are winning and more positive when we are losing.
Seems to me that you are a bit OTT in taking what 1500clubs says as gospel - all he did was predict the correct weekend score in the face of 'BELIEVE' nonsense ... we were never going to win on Saturday for various reasons but some people seem to think that blind faith somehow wins over an intelligent punt.
Do you even go to games? Have you ever heard the crowd when we go one down? The way it works is people moan cs we are generally rubbish (in all the aspects yu highlight) - I dont see why you are looking to 1500club to be some guiding light of blinkered/partizan support...maybe if you binned that nonsense and boo'ed a bit more you might see favourable results.
Up the Iron!”

“You stike me as someone very insecure. Always trying to prove what a true fan you are bleating on about how many games you go to and if people don't match that, they are less of a fan.
I don't recall anything I said indicating that I am a blind believer, please feel free to point out the bits I have said that indicate otherwise.
I don't even oppose all your views, the only thing I oppose is yours and others complete GLEE in United's misery. As I said that is the part I am unable to wrap my head around.
I feel relegation looming, possibly and hopefully not but realistically so. I also think the club could be doing so much more and in the main it is really oppurtunity wasted. if we do get relegate I will NOT be bouncing around on here saying how right I was and how clever I was and how much of a fan I was because I predicted it.
I will be too gutted.
I have never bet against the Iron and not even bet against England (although I would be richer if i did both)
It is easy to be negative when you are hardly winning, it takes no skill.”

“When you've got the confidence to see beyond 'we will win/believe' etc you'll have the hang of being a TRUE supporter.
Being a 'true fan' has nowt to do with paritizan support and everything to do with an open mind....with your mentality you wont be watching us (if you do?) drop through the leagues, as you dont have the passion for a fight.
To me, that is crystal clear but I cant see it sinking in for you my friend!
Anyhows - keep scratching your head as to how a supporter can be so utterly opposition your vision of a fan.
Up the Iron!”

“"Pull your finger out and get behind the club."??
I am behind the club, all the way. I guess we have different interpretations of that, If I am behind the club I don't bet on them to lose and then post on here with glee about it.
Takes all sorts I guess”

“Pray tell what you find 'empty' in mysccessfully predicting the correct score in an away game?
What would you prefer-silence on everything that concerns SUFC in case it causes upset? Pull your finger out and get behind the club.
Up the Iron!”

“Regular follows of 'THE 1500CLUB MOVEMENT' will be all too aware of his ability of predicting not on the result but the score and scorers...win or lose....Mohamed Ali had the same similar skill...
Predicting an Iron defeat does maketh one a lesser supporter - I would put my season ticket on any Scarborough side beating us, whatever position in the league we are....same as I would always expect us to beat Torquay home or away.
Listen up - 1500club is never one to bang on about 92 club membership, home and away for 30 years, youth team away fixtures etc because in the bigger picture that is all NISH compared to other supporters, within the top five percent of the TOP FIVE PERCENT of all Iron supporters.

“O'Moggie, you never fail to surprise me, you are stating that some supporters are wanting the team to lose.
But you appear to be not bothered when they play very poorly and lose, so "IT IS YOU THAT IS NOT BOTHERED IF THE TEAM LOSES", and are not upset that we are in our present position, because of your continued verbal support that you give the management that have put us in this present situation of near certainty of being relegated. If more supporters complained about the running of our club, things would possibly change, but after saying that, at least we could expect some verbal from Wharton on what are the clubs aims !!!!
A statement that refers to the team performances, transfers of our better players, ground improvements which have not been attended to for many years, and what happens to all the clubs income from the Football League, TV money, transfer mooney, advertising revenue etc.
You O'Moggie, along with a few other Happy Clappers are just content to give support to these people, even though we are playing in a "cowshed" of a ground, and listening to that old guy on the mich with his "come on ladies and gents, boys and girls, lets get behind the lads, we are Scunthorpe Unitttteddddddd.
Small teams around us like Hull, Doncaster, Chesterfield and next year Rotherham are all playing in decent modern grounds, whilst we have to endure our rubbish set up, lets make some effort, and at least inform the supporters what the board intends for our club.
UP THE IRON!!”
