Tata's current apprentice of the year has been fined after cannabis was found in his car.

Michael Cutforth, of Coventry Close, Scunthorpe, pleaded guilty at Grimsby Crown Court to having 25g grams of cannabis in his car when stopped by police on October 17.

Cutforth, 20, was cleared of possession with intent to supply and of possessing criminal property.

The court heard he was driving a friend, Sam Blackbourn, of Coppleston Court in Scunthorpe, around and was unaware that he was dealing cannabis.

Edward Bindloss, defending, said: "He drove his friends to play football and when they got back in the car, his friend asked him to drive him to the Riddings area of Scunthorpe.

"He knew nothing in advance about this and remained in the car throughout.

"He became suspicious when his friend would disappear with a sports bag for a couple of minutes and then return to the car. My client's stupidity is concerning him greatly.

"He is a man of good character. He is an apprentice engineer at Tata and was named apprentice of the year in the last few months."

Cutforth was fined £250 and ordered to pay £350 towards prosecution costs.
