Torres welcome was just another day at office for Iron's Chelsea loanee
IF EVER there was an advocate of the saying 'treat others as you wish to be treated' it's new Iron recruit Ben Gordon.
Given his stint at Scunthorpe United is the 19-year-old's third loan spell inside 12 months, he knows all about being the new boy.

CAN'T WAIT: Young Chelsea defender Ben Gordon is excited about making his Championship debut for Scunthorpe at Cardiff tomorrow. Picture: Ray Corke.
So when the Bradford-born full-back enjoyed a chance meeting over lunch at Chelsea's Cobham training ground last week, his welcome was friendly and nerveless – just like his introduction at Glanford Park.
It was the day after the closure of the January transfer window and with the Blues' first-team squad up in Sunderland preparing for a Premier League encounter, the canteen was sparse.
That's probably the reason why, you'd imagine, new £50million signing Fernando Torres was mixing with the London club's reserve players.
Not so according to Gordon, who is likely to come straight into the starting line-up when the Iron tackle promotion-chasing Cardiff City tomorrow.
Sharing conversation with Chelsea's stars of today is an every day occurrence for the ones of tomorrow.
And it's one reason why being on the same pitch as the likes of Craig Bellamy and Jay Bothroyd tomorrow will not leave him star-struck.
"He came into the canteen and introduced himself like it was nothing really. It was weird seeing him in Chelsea training gear. We were one of the first people to welcome him," Gordon said of World Cup winner Torres.
"One of my mates said to me 'you met Torres today' and being from where I am, I see people like John Terry and Ashley Cole every day. I never really think of it like that, but it's crazy, it really is.
"I'm sure people will think they aren't approachable, but they honestly really are.
"When I'd gone back there, people were asking me about how I'd got on at Kilmarnock and saying that they knew I was going to Scunthorpe. They take notice of the young players' careers.
"When people ask you to tell them what it's like at Chelsea, it's really difficult to describe. It really is a different world.
"I've been at Kilmarnock for six months, but then you go back to Chelsea and you forget that you see your Carlo Ancelottis and John Terrys every other day.
"Things like that, and the facilities, the training ground etc, it's amazing. You don't realise how much though until you go back.
"The reserves and first-team squads share a building, so the first-team players are always around.
"Pre-season we were all together, which was a great experience."

“Nevermind that - on he strike of 3pm every weekday, I enjoy a nice slice of cake and a pot of tea with doylee and perhaps a choice of sandwiches....beyond this CAKE HABIT, I average several brews per day from the mug in the morning stretching through to the elevensys, a pint of green tea about noon and so on and so forth - I love a nice cuppa.
So - when I walk up any high street, how come they've been over run with Starbucks, Neros and Coffee Nations? When did this FARCE happen - outside tourist areas like Harrogate, I cannot recal the last time I saw a proper Engligh tea shop, they've completley disapeared...even when you go to a cafe it's all coffee - either that instant muck or triple strength loopy juice that is akin to LIQUID WHITE DEATH. I'm fortunate in having the luxury of a kettle and 'facilities' but still...I feel it's a shame that it's like assisting a heavily pregnant cow through a TRICKY breach birth in order to find a decent brew - even moreso at an affordable price - £1.20 - £3 for hot water and a tea bag in paper cup? Hmmmm not happy at all.
Appologies for hijacking this thread but has anyone consdered the prices of these chains either (not that I give them my money)? £2 plus for a cup of coffee? WTF!? The biggest problem is that tea in a flask is a no go so unless you can find a suitable outlet (and the only ones worthwhile are cafes these days but 'builders tea' in a chipped mug wears a bit thin by 3pm IMHO you are SNOOKERED.
