DRINKS in Scunthorpe town centre bars and clubs will soon be served in plastic glasses.

The move comes after a spate of weekend 'glassings' which have resulted in numerous people being injured when bottles and glasses have been used as weapons.

In one incident the victim, who has not been identified, required seven stitches in a facial wound.

Licensees on the 30-strong Scunthorpe Pub Watch at their November meeting gave approval to the switchover – subject to costing details being worked out.

Pub Watch's newly-elected chairman Patience Roberts said: "We are all in agreement because glassing is such a serious offence, and we want to do everything possible to stamp out this type of unspeakable behaviour.

"We are also to introduce aggressive banning from our premises for people convicted of such offences."

Traditional glasses are set to be replaced with a polycarbonate variety which looks and feels similar to ordinary glass.

North Lincolnshire Police licensing officer Pc Steve Turner said: "Over the past six weekends in the Scunthorpe town centre there has been an incident every weekend where at least one person has been injured by a bottle or a glass.

"Pub Watch is in full support of Humberside Police and will be working alongside us to help eradicate this problem."

“Its quite simple, Bells don't make decent whisky!
If plastic is so good why is it that only cheap cider is sold in it in bottles? Wine in glass bottles, spirits in glass bottles, beer in glass. Don't serve the intoxicated, arrest the louts simple - except that bar profits would be down and the Police would have to pull their finger out!”

“Zest, unfortunately is full of chavs. It is also run by chavs which is a shame as it's a lovely place and has a lot of potential. The girls behind the bar - more interested in flirting with the guys that serving drinks! Cheap tacky tasteless place - enough said!”

“Firstly, D @ Work Zest is not a chavy bar! It's probably the least chavy of all scunthorpes town centre bars & is most certainly not run by chavs,it's run by a professional & successful chain. As for The Mint I can't comment as I haven't been in there in sometime. If you want to see chavs try going to Showboat, The Venue or Shnapps! I've been to pubs that serve drinks in these glasses out of town, the only thing I would say is that because they're not glass people just chuck them on the floor & it becomes more of a trip hazard than the glasses were a glassing hazard!”

“It's a co-polymer: Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Which therefore makes it an acrylic which makes me correct. Ner ner. Dave Clarke M.Sc (hons)”

“The "cup" shown in the picture is actually a form of polystyrene Dave Clarke of Barton. Polystyrene is certainly not a form of glass, so these "plastic glasses" are in fact plastic and not glass! And by the way, how did you know I had a smart a***, have you been looking it? You naughty man!!!!!”
