Tributes follow death of John Towndrow - former Mayor of Scunthorpe
John Towndrow - a former Mayor of Scunthorpe and the inaugural chairman of North Lincolnshire Council - has died in the town’s Sycamore Lodge at the age of 75 years.
Father-of-two Mr Towndrow, a retired steelworker, served on both local authorities from 1976 until 1999 when he decided to quit politics along with his late wife Terena.

He was best known as the Scunthorpe housing chairman for many years and also as secretary of the town’s former Kinsley Labour Club.
Tribute to John's work for the community has been paid by Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin.

He Tweeted: "Very sorry to hear that John Towndrow has passed away. He was a tower of strength within the Labour movement locally, serving wth distinction."
Councillor Liz Redfern, the Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: "I really got to know both John and Terena when I was Mayor of Boothferry Borough Council 16 years ago.
"John was a very friendly and welcoming person.
"Together with Terena, they were a formidable couple.
"John was a great advocate for the people of Ashby and will be sadly missed."
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
