Bosses at the trust which runs Scunthorpe General Hospital have not ruled out the possibility of more redundancies.

The Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is currently running a cost savings programme as part of a national drive to save £20 billion by 2014.

At least 206 posts were cut last year across the trust, which is required to save £15 million per year until 2014.

Trade union representatives at another of the trust hospitals in Grimsby have raised concerns that a further 245 posts could be cut.

Dr Neil Pease, director of organisational development and workforce at the trust, said he did not want to speculate about figures before any plans were finalised.

But he said: "Because three quarters of our spending is on staffing, it is inconceivable that this requirement will not impact on numbers of staff we employ, but no firm plans have been finalised as yet for the coming year.

"We can say though that staff redundancies are not the only solution to achieving financial savings.

"We are in the middle of a cost improvements programme and are looking at all options to save money while raising the quality of the services we provide."

Julian Corlett, secretary of the Unison branch representing Scunthorpe General Hospital workers, said he was not in a position to comment at this stage.
