PARANORMAL investigators Mulder and Scully might have to make a trip to the region after mysterious balls of light and strange tints were spotted in North Lincolnshire's skies.

Residents in the region have certainly been trying to open up the X-Files after two separate reports of UFO sightings were made to the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

Lesley Whittingham (71), from Jerusalem Cottages, Alkborough, described seeing bright orange and yellow tints in the air at around 1.30pm on Saturday.

"It looked like a giant explosion in the sky and I was really surprised," she said.

Mrs Whittingham watched from her upstairs window with her husband Frank (78) as the stationary object was seen for five minutes before mysteriously disappearing.

"I saw my next-door neighbour and pointed it out, but by that time it was fading," she added.

After grabbing her camera to catch the phenomenon on film, Mrs Whittingham said she showed the pictures to her friends who were also stumped as to what it could be.

"It's my first UFO sighting but it reminds me of planes hitting in wartime," she added.

And Mrs Whittingham was not the only spooked resident this new year.

“I found your reviews whilst looking for more info on the supposedly UFO sightings. Why? Because I had seen them twice!! The first was Christmas Eve @ 21:15 I was walking back home when I became aware of something with an white/orange glow, It didn't look round to me, but like a 'curved cornered triangle' shape. Arriving home it was in clear view from my garden and it hadn't moved, I hadn't even thought of UFO's then! Only when it moved slightly from left to right and then literally zoomed off in a horizontal straight line until it reduced to pinprick size and disappeared. I was froze to the spot!!! I was bewildered and decided not to mention it to anyone 'cos I didn't want them to think I was, well mad!!!
Returning back at work I overheard a colleague asking if anyone else had seen this 'glowing shape' in the sky!! It seems from our descriptions we had seen the same thing!! Ofcourse we laughed it off as you do!!!??? I did mention it t my daughter who just laughed at me!!! BUT on New Years Eve my daughter and I arrived home @ approx 21:55. She headed upstairs as I went to the outside shed to feed the dog and cat we have. The thought of UFO's was at this time....forgotten, until I was about to step back into the house...there in the same place, I saw this 'thing' again!!! This time it did seem closer! I screamed for my daughter to come, as she did I was saying that it reminded me of a 'electric shaver' head! She came laughing down the stairs, then she saw 'the thing' and became dumb!!!
The shape was the same as the first time, but within this there were 3 circles of red, with 'white glowing' inners. We both were both saying 'what is it ?' It stayed without moving enabling both of us a good look. then, there was a slight movement, just as the first one and it disappeared as it zoomed off horizontally in the same direction! We were both freaked by it ! We both were totally unsure of what exactly it was we had seen, and we both laughed about it. It was a joke that her mum had been 'visited'! Or that 'Phillips' had done a great ad for their shavers!!!!!!!
Although we both agreed that there was no way on this earth that it was a lantern or a firework!!!! ( We were both sober too!! )
I have never taken stories of UFO's seriously...but we did see this!!!!!!

“After reading all the comments and just to reassure all the people who may think Im being thick, Ive just gone on to check about Chinese lanterns andbelieve the people suggesting it was this that people have seen should have seen the sight themselves as it definitely was not a Chinese lantern. And I thought it was an alien in the news paper photo too only thats a bit harsh!”

“After just watching this morning on tv about the'UFO' sighting , Ive realised the significance of what myself and my children saw on Saturday at five fifty pm in Bournemouth/Poole. I had e mailed some comet experts to try to find out if there was anything happening at that time as I thought it was a comet that we had seen. I was driving from Poole back into Bournemouth to my mothers and saw at a distance coming from the Ringwood area a large orangey yellow sphere of flames, it was travelling slowly and steadily , not fast, there was only one, it was very low or appeared to be as I thought at first it was an aeroplane on fire but As it came closer and went over the top of us, we all saw that it was completely circular and a ball of fire with a trail, it was travelling in a straight line but it seemed far to big to be anything easily explainable. We watched it until it disappeared into the distance towards the Poole area. We couldnt believe it, Ive told a few people we'd seen a comet and came straight to my mothers and used her computer to look up comets and meteors, it seemed to me to be very similar to the pictures that were comets although it seemed so low I had to follow it until it went out of our vision as I thought there was going to be some sort of accident. It was big, orangey yellow , very very bright in the centre, seemed to be low down almost like a low flying aeroplane and had flames around it and a tail. Having seen the papers a couple of days ago, thought it was a bit odd and thought that the wind turbine had the accident on Tuesday as it wasnt made clear in the paper, after seeing the tv report this morning, I am CONVINCED now it had something to do with what we saw at ten to six on Saturday evening as I thought something was going to be hit as it seemed to low, so much so , I was really carefully driving back to Dorchester that evening trying to see if there was any damage anywhere and the children were checking the sky all the way home to see if they could see something else!!!We were convinced and very excited at the time to have seen a comet. Now Im not so sure as it was very low and pretty similar to what the seventy one year old lady saw and photographed. What is the thought on this? Is there any monitoring of comets at all as I thought there was or does it just go on peoples sightings ?It was far to big to be anything like a meteor or light reflection, it was definitely a very clear sphere of something with flames around with a tail as it travelled along slowly though. It was really wierd.”

“Looking at the images it looks like Lesley Whittingham has witnessed a Sundog. Totally confusing if you have never seen one before.

    From Wikipedia

'A sun dog or sundog (scientific name parhelion, plural parhelia, for "beside the sun") is a common bright circular spot on a solar halo. It is an atmospheric optical phenomenon primarily associated with the reflection or refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals making up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Often, two sun dogs can be seen (one on each side of the sun) simultaneously.'”

“The 60 odd foot blade was found at the base of the wind turbine, which poses the possibility that as it came away, it might have struck one of the other blades and damaging it. When we were kids in the late 70s we once built a tree house in the woods just at the edge of Crem- looking out towards Parkwood school, it was getting very late and was cold and dark, and we witnessed a distant light near the Viaduct. It then came towards us over the school and then above us in the wood. it then slowed and hovered up over the woods above us towards the collage field where we were still able to see the light through the trees. it then just disapeared. It had no sound , no flashing lights. These things have got to be secret military designs, and can not possibly be Alien in nature. They would be mad to come here. Beside Gordon Brown would have taxed them by now.”

“Some of the comments of you people here are idiotic to say the least... Im sure that old lady knows the sun when she see's it and as for sky lanterns hahahaha

So you clever people care to suggest what hit the wind turbine and where a 65ft long blade disappeared off to??

Yup, I didnt think so.. Read, then engage brain before dismissing out of hand !!”

“Glad to see the 36p that the Scunthorpe Telegraph is fleecing people for is being well spent. They print utter tripe like this but when it comes to people raising thousands of pounds for childrens hospitals they cant find space. Utter drivel print something the people of Scunthorpe will be proud of not embarrassed by.”
