A Highways Incident Response Team was on the scene quickly to clean up some of the debris and assess the integrity of the bridge, closing the eastbound carriageway at about 6pm last night.
The Highways Agency has now confirmed that it will remain closed between junctions with the A160 and A1173 until noon tomorrow.
Drivers heading towards Grimsby should leave the A180 at its junction with the A160 and take the eastbound A160 towards Immingham Docks, joining the southbound A1173 and re-joining the eastbound A180 from the A1173.
This is a signed diversion with drivers being advised to follow the diamond symbol.
