Scores of people across North Lincolnshire have already taken advantage of a scheme to reduce their monthly council tax payments from April.

Last week www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk publicised a change in the law that means local councils across the UK giving householders the option to settle their council tax bills in 12 instalments rather than the traditional 10 (with two "free" months in February and March).

10 months or 12 months? How many instalments do you prefer to pay to North Lincolnshire Council?

That's provided they pay through their bank account - by arrangement with the council.

People pay the same in the end, but having lower monthly payments - spread over the full year - clearly has advantages for many.

This story proved to be our website's most read of the day when it appeared last week, creating great interest among council tax payers.

And a North Lincolnshire Council spokeswoman said yesterday (Monday): "So far 261 people have requested to swap to 12 monthly payments rather than 10."

www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk also launched an onsite poll giving people across North Lincolnshire an opportunity to say whether or not they intend to change the way they pay to 10 instalments.

The poll closed at 2pm today (Tuesday March 12) with almost one-quarter of those who responded (23 per cent) suggesting they have already asked the council to switch to 12 payments from 10.

The remaining 77 per cent who responded to the poll indicated they would not be seeking a change.

“UPDATED: THREE QUARTERS of people polled on council tax fail to request change in payments to North Lincolnshire authority.

Nigel is spinning for the Tories again so I'll spin for the other lot.”

“You're paying the same overall so I would rather pay ten months and have two free. It's only a £12/month difference for me so there is no advantage paying over twelve, I like the extra I have to spend in those two months.”

“All this poll suggests is that a) very few people knew about it b) No-one looks at the Council website and c) slightly more read the Telegraph ... of course if it was a NIGHTLY paper all that would change in a heartbeat”
