UPDATED: Five people taken to hospital as accident closes A18 on Mortal Ash Hill near Scunthorpe

Two men were trapped inside a flatbed lorry near Scunthorpe this morning (Monday, September 10), resulting in a section of the A18 being closed for several hours.

Emergency services were called to a a collision on the eastbound carriageway near, Mortal Ash Hill.

    No left turn was possible from Brigg Road in Scunthorpe onto the A18 eastbound following the accident

Initially, an articulated lorry and a Transit van were reported to have been involved.

Police, fire and ambulance services were all alerted.

Later, Humberside Fire and Rescue service revealed that the incident had involved a motorised lawn mower and two lorries.

Two men - trapped inside the flatbed - were released by using sets of hydraulic cutting gear.

Three other people were already clear of their vehicles when fire-fighters arrived.

Five casualties were taken to hospital by ambulance.

A road closure was put in place at nearby Ashby Ville and continued well into the afternoon.
