Tony Glew triumphs in Holme Hall's two-day 36-hole Cottingham Cup
TONY Glew stuck to the task perfectly as he triumphed in Holme Hall's two-day 36-hole Cottingham Cup.
Well over 100 men competed in near perfect conditions to take the trophy, with Glew finishing top of the pile when the scores from the two days were added together.
Andrew Sowerby led the field after the first day with a nett 67 on count-back from Reg Tomlinson.
However, neither maintained that form over the second day, where Gary Myers took the honours with a nett 65, again on a count-back, from Lee Barber.
It wasn't enough to beat Glew, who clinched the main prize with his combined scores of nett 69 and 68.
In second place was Vance Barber (70+68=138), with young Thomas Tomlinson (69+69=138) taking third. Mick Burgin (77+74=151) took the best gross prize.
Jenny Kennedy was the winner in the ladies section when they held their EWGA medal, with Shirley Wynne (92-13=79) runner-up.
Another EWGA medal was won by Sue Brown (81-10-71) from Kay Smith (87-16=71) and Emmilee Taylor (74-1=73).
It was Ann Wright who came up smelling of roses, taking the Rose Bowl with 91-20=71, followed by Sheila Petchey (85-11=74).
Holme Hall's junior section also had a busy week, playing two medals that count towards the Roger Bickley Trophy.
Jack Woodrow (80-11=69) came in first place in the first one, from Josh Raspin (76-6=70) and Jordan Campbell (91-20=71).
In the second medal, George Robinson (75-6=69) took the honours from Oliver Cross (79-9=70) and Woodrow (80-10=70) on a count-back.
And young golfers also provided the highlight of the club's week when Holme Hall entertained the Lincolnshire Little Imps.
The Imps are a section of the Lincolnshire Union of Golf Clubs that tries to encourage young golfers from the age of five years upwards.
In all, 34 players from across Lincolnshire took part in this nine-hole competition, playing from the forward blue tees.
Eight players from the home club competed, with three – Eddie Cross, Jamie Kemp and Max Licciardi – among the many prizes on offer.
For any youngsters looking to take up the sport, Holme Hall holds free golf sessions on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings for five to 10-year-olds.
Elsewhere, Elsham held their mixed club championship, with the tough format of a foursomes medal competition.
Winners on the day were Dr John and Mrs Sarah Harris with a nett 69.5. Richard and Jennifer Hedley finished second with a nett 71.
