UNION chiefs have confirmed Corus will axe a total of 366 further in Scunthorpe.

Mick Fell, chairman of the Scunthope Corus Works Multi-Union Committee, said the jobs losses would come from the manual grades – or FEP (Future Employment Programme) as they are known in the industry.

Mr Fell said: "We will take every action to minimise the impact on our members and mitigate the losses if possible."

And Mr Fell revealed Scunthorpe will host an emergency meeting of the national steel committee - made up of Community, GMB and Unite trade unions - at the town's Redbourn Social Club at 1.30pm on Monday.

"We shall be seeking support and then report back to our members," he added.

The works chairman repeated his plea for the British Government to take immediate action to save steel-making in Scunthorpe and the rest of the country.

"Today's job losses following the collapse of the National Framework Agreement were as bad as we had feared. Our concerns were well founded," he said.

"The UK steel industry is now at crisis point and could tip over the edge if the government does not step in.

"An offer of £5-million to help retrain our redundant members is not enough."

“As a wife of a steel worker im deeply worried about the job cuts as if my partner lost his job there would be no redunecy package as he only has work for corus just under a year, but contracted hansons 10 years before that but that wont be taken into acount. I feel sorry for every one who has a young family like ours with bills to pay this will just not affect the steelindustry it is the whole town .Then where will we be for our next generation coming through”

“Most of the people on this board are unbelievably naive as far as business is concerned! When costs are out of kilter with turnover what do you expect a business to do???? Continue haemorrhaging money??? How would you run your business??? Profitably or unprofitably???

    Comment from the unions:
"We keep hoping the job losses are ending and then another announcement comes along. We are disappointed an agreement could not be reached that would prevent job losses. Totally blinkered as was Scargill!

How inept are the unions - clueless if you ask me! Unions are an out-moded format which should have been buried along with UK coal!

Would any right-minded business person have these people running their companies??? No chance!”

“May I recommend to those who have posted their strong views on the matter, that they also e-mail their MP with them as well. I am sure that they would value them. To save anyone looking up the Scunthorpe MPs offical address should it be needed it is:

    MORLEYE@parliament.uk

At the end of the day you can post all you like on here to let your views be known to a limited audience and petitioning is also OK, but you also on occassion need to lobby further afield where major issues are concerned and it takes more than one voice to do that - if nothing else it won't hurt to do so. I communicate regularly with my MP and though we have fundermental differences of opinion in areas on local issues, he respects my right to challenge, question, comment and lobby.”

“Bemused, have you not yet realised, that Corus employees are part of a priviliged elite ! The government is falling over itself to offer a £5 million re training package for them, the rest of us can go whistle.
If you are not employed by corus, NO ONE CARES ! !
This is discrimination of the highest order, there must be at least 1500 people that have lost thier jobs this year. Many of these will not have had the comfort of a corus redundancy package, or a salary of around £30k to soften the blow. What qualifies steelworkers for retraining ? Are they that different from the Hansons or Muliserv lads, or the guys from ColepCCL, these are the guys who want retraining and help.
Everyone has basic physiological needs, and has to pay mortgage, gas electric etc, and i respect that, but to put corus guys on a pedestal and ignore everyone else is bordering on criminal.
Ask anyone who has had recent dealings with the jobcenter, no one cares, no one wants to help, quite simply sign here, keep looking for work, off you go.
Welcome to the real world lads n lasses, its not very nice, unless you work for corus that is.”

“Bemused, this is what people are not realising, a statement on Teesside lastnight from M Leahey said for every corus worker another 4 workers would be affected. At tcp 2000 employees and 1000 contractors at risk but a study has shown upto 10,000 local jobs would be affected. These people who dig at our wages should consider how their jobs will be affected!”

“Why do they only report Corus 'staff' job cuts and not contractors?
There has been over 1000 contractors finished in recent months yet these numbers have not been reported.”
