Physical demands are no concern for Iron midfielder Wright

DESPITE notching up over 900 miles with two long away trips in the past four days, midfielder Josh Wright has dismissed any idea there may be a few weary legs in the Scunthorpe United camp.

The Iron suffered their second successive defeat on the road on Tuesday, with a 2-0 loss at Portsmouth.

But, for Wright – whose side host Swansea City on Saturday – the constant stream of matches can only be a good thing, leaving United no time to dwell on any bad results.

"The beauty of it is, there are games every three or four days at the moment," he said.

"Yes, it's tiring, but we're fit enough.

"The gaffer changed a few players around on Tuesday night to freshen things up a bit, and I think that showed in the first half – we looked sharper.

"I feel all-right. With the little break I had, I feel okay and I want to continue playing.

"I'm enjoying it but we need to start picking up points again to push ourselves up the table.

"It's frustrating that we didn't get anything on Tuesday, but you've got to be man enough and professional enough to adapt to it and look to the next game.

"We've got another game in hand and we know it's up to us to stay up."

United had hoped to use their midweek game to close the gap between themselves and fourth-from-bottom Crystal Palace, with their nearest relegation rivals not in action on the day.

But they remain four points adrift with one game in hand, feeling 'robbed' after Lee Miller's header was disallowed in the first half for a push on Greg Halford.

It is on their own turf where Scunthorpe have to now step-up their battle, insists Wright, with a need to cut out defensive errors also top of the agenda after they proved costly at Fratton Park.

"We have turned our form around a bit at home," continued the 21-year-old.

"It's going to be a big game on Saturday, but we know we can beat them, regardless of where they are in the league.

"We know Swansea are not going to fancy coming to our place.

"We're a passing team but we can adapt to our pitch and we've beaten some of the top teams there recently.

"It's going to suit us because I'm sure they won't fancy that.

"The next game is important now.

"We went down to Portsmouth thinking we could get something, obviously we haven't but the next game comes along now and we've got to get something out of that.

"We feel we got robbed a bit with our goal in the first half, I think that should have stood personally.

"It's just frustrating because we did start very well.

"They upped their game a lot, but we caused a lot of our own problems and the biggest disappointment was their actual goals. They were just sloppy.

"Who knows what would happen if we had gone 1-0 up.

"What can you do? You've got to get up and get on with it."

“I reckon that Baraclough picked the wrong side at Bristol - in hindsight I think he should have picked the Pompey line up but he is a young manager and we have to accept that as the cheapest choice, he will make errors.

Intteresting stuff there MarlowTraveller - while everyone else expands we reduce, in direct line with success on the pitch! People say 'you dont know how lucky we are' but when we are back in the DUNGEON DIVISION, one glance around GP will hold no evidence of any success in the last five years.

    Up the Iron!”

“ExPat Iron Somerset. Like you I would love to see my home team stay up, but alas I think we will also be playing Wycombe next year, they look like being promoted to League One. The difference Wycombe has to us is they have a dynamic director in Steve Hayes who also owns London Wasps and they ground share. He is looking to build a new stadium to hold up to 15,000 supporters, they will also build a hotel and houses on the site if approved. The developer will of course part bankroll the stadium with the sale of houses and hotel revenue. Its certainly a club with vision, but I will never watch a Wycombe game unless I have to when Scunny come down.”

“Know what ... I'm fed up of 'rallying calls', 'what ifs' & blaming referees, if our manager players were half as good at football as they are at talking big we wouldn't need to worry about relegation.
I desperately want my home town team to stay up but sorry ... see you all next season at Yeovil?”
